can someone tell me if this sort of tyre carrier could be made to work on a 4runner as i want to keep my standard rear bumper?
also would the tyre have to go on the outside instead of the inside so that the tailgate could go downflat

get a swing tyre carrier thing, the one that swings to the side when you release it from the rear bar.
theres a pic of a surf in the willowglen thread(in comps and events section) jason b is the owner and it has one, its a modified arb rear bar, it had a 35inch tyre on it.
i know you want to keep your std bumper, but i think you should be keeping the barwork as close to the body, and youll have to come up with some tricky mechanism to make it release so you can access the tailgate.
id be going for a swing type carrier, less work
just my 20 cents
