hey guys i just brought a 88 4.2 petrol with 300000k on the clock and just wanting to know how many k's ppl are getting out of a tank
also is there any way to make them better on fuel
and are they a good car to tow with as i purchased this to tow my other car cheers brendon

hi mate youl be lucky to get 450km out of 90 litre tank thats wat im averaging and have changed points to electronic with a pertronix kit added extractors and changed muffler,added snorkel and done full service there a great tow vehicle just heavy on juice
just a report on fuel economy from the Petrol 4.2 Litre 6 over a few tanks:
usually sit on the speed limit 100 or 110 where applicable.
When i first got it, stock standard everything:

Usually average 20L/100km, more when towing. Not much you can do to make it better other than driving like a granny, all the above mentioned mods will make it nicer to drive and more reliable but only slightly better economy.
I run 33's, snorkel, extractors, electronic ignition, rebuilt the carby etc.
still crap. Usually get around the 300-350km mark to 75-80 litres depending on how much off road I've been into, usually around half off road, quarter hwy, quarter round town.
Before I rebuilt carby I was lucky to weigh in over the 200km mark.
IMO shut up and take it. We're the ones dumb enough to buy them, we pay to fuel them.
Personally, I'll save for LS1/2 and put that in before I spend coin putting it on gas. Until then I'll just have to drive my other cars round town and keep it for playing on weekends.

the oddometer doesn't work so i use a navigator to check mileage.
when i first bought it i fully expected over 20L/100Kms and was pleasantly surprised ... on the first tank and thought i may have under filled it but it keeps on being more economical than my GU factory TD ute... and still goes quicker
dunno how it has been tuned by the previous owner but its done over 350,000 Kms with few problems.

I get heaps of guys at work whinging about how their old shit box GQ was faster than their GU. Less weight = less effort to move, therefore same engine can push lighter car faster.
