unexplained noise
just been 4wding and on the way home i noticed a rumbling noise under acceleration around 60km/ph ...i unlocked the hubs but is still making the noise ...what could it be?

check the uni joints for any movement etc. Mine where fine on a recent trip to bundy. got 15mins from destination started a vibration/rumbling.

iv just cleaned and had a quick squizz underneath...the center bearing looks normal...haven't yet checked for play...unis look normal... im pretty sure its in the diff.... another question...what would cause a starter motor to start sometimes and not others?

That is soo funny!! i think exactly the same!! If you look at a bog hole and know that you can drive through it then drive around it!! you have nothing to prove and it will just COST YOU MONEY... And if the track has a boghole that cannot be driven around, do you give up and go another way even though you know the rest of the track is a damn good drive, or are you bad at maintaining you vehicle, unis, et al are not all that expensive. anyway, hes been given enough advice to be able to diagnose the problem correctly, and hes been told where to check, how to check and how to fix it.
im sure he could get it sorted if he wanted to, especially if hes a mech or works at a mech shop.
i agree with those that say learn to drive the lux offroad and upgrade the bits that NEED to be upgraded. i think that mud can be extremely dangerous for the driveline/electricals, but i myself am guilty of driving through bogholes, and im currently in the process of rebuilding/replacing the bits that dont like the mud.
all i can say is that mud is part of 4wdriving, whether you choose to drive through it or not is entirely up to you. just give the driveline a wash with a gerni after playing in the stuff.
personally i think that mud can be fun, just like ruts, rocks, climbs, descents and everything else that we find out on the tracks.
