To set timing on 80's

Warm up motor.
Early 80 1fz-fe 4.5 injected
bridge (with small bit of service wire) TE1 and E1 in the little black diagnosis box on passanger firewall.
Timing should be 3 degree BTDC @ idle. move distributor to adjust.

Later 80 1fz-fe (80 update or 100 series)
Need to connect E1 and and TC in diagnosis box and timing should be 3 degree BTDC @ idle. The later motor has coil packs and crank angle sensor not sure how you adjust timing.

Think you may have been looking for more than that. i.e running some more advance on gas. But not sure about that. however would recomment getting it dyno tuned. preferable at a gas joint the that knows what they are doing.

Just ot of interest when did the head reco shop say you need to check Valve clearences. (most say every 40.000 on gas)?

If everything was radiused so no burn brite edges to upset detonation, and platinum plugs you can run up to 14 deg static, if its just been put together you might get up to 8 deg.

Dyno best way to tell, while monitoring the knock sensor signal.

Then try it again in low range, as they can detonate in low when they can rev quickly .

its a 93mod 1FZ-FE, thanks for your coments, i know how to adjust the timing was just curious about what the setting should be, dont really want to go as far as a dyno tune the pocket is really empty after fixing the head, ill start at 3deg and see how i go.
