Found some very cheap tyres brand new 750 r16 mud terrain 16 ply with 6ply sidewall for $200. They have the funniest name ever and are called,

I have seen them in person..
They are heavy weightwise,
the sidewalls are physically thick and difficult to flex
I reckon at least 5 times thicker than the tyres currently on my 100 series
The rubber is about a medium compound like say 280 treadwear and very deep.. like 25ish mm.
The guy told me it's what the pig shooters use, as they are cheap and very very tough.
It is at a local truck tyre company
I can't find much about them on the net..

Those LL62's look the same as the MRF Super Traction bias 12 plies I run on my 105 series. They're a little rough on the road but awesome off-road. Haven't stakes or destroyed one yet. I've done plenty of off-track work with them, been across the simpson twice, up the gulf, through the Strezlecki etc......
Rubbed a hole in one tube which made the tyre go flat due to running too low tyre pressures, and a nail through another. Other than that, they're magic.
I think these kind of tyres are underrated when it comes to serious off-road work. It's interesting to see what people run around town ( same as in all the magazine advertisements etc) compared to what's actually run in the bush.
I'll be sticking with my ugly split rims and bias tyres.
Just my opinion.
Back to your tyres........ I think you could do worse than to run some of those tyres. Depending what work you plan to do with them, you'll be impressed.

That tread patern looks almost exactly like the Dunlop Super Grippers (which are now discontinued!)

we deal with a mob called 'panda tyres' and they seem to be pretty good with prices etc.
and a mate of mine who was the copper at Yaraka (bout 14hrs west of brissi), reckons that heaps of people use them and there tough as.
Plus its cheaper to buy them in bulk rather than paying for a mickeygoodyeargoodrich mudzztssssxxxxx tyre.
but yeah if you get them id be keen to know how they go!!!

Ok so I have purchase 4 of the ll62.
So far I have fitted them to the split rims (it is so easy! me likey)
will get them balanced next week and take them for a spin.
They are almost an inch taller than the standard tyres, tho i think it is because of the very deep tread.
I am happy with my xmas present, time will tell if I am an IDIOT

reminds me of the goodride CR857s i was running. heavy bastards but could drive through hell with them. shit on wet roads..
the heaviness will sap some power, as will the deep aggressive tread pattern, all resulting in a loss of fuel economy, plus the taller sidewalls.
but for serious work, out in the middle of nowhere, i can see why you would use something like this

Thread revival.. I have an update!
These tyres grip very well on dirt, reasonable on road, can be let down to 5psi without problems, have not been staked (like they are made of pure kevlar or somethin) super tough sidewalls! BUT they wear really quickly, in the middle of the tyre, still chunky and grippy on the outer edges of tread.
Would I buy them again?
If I was short of cash and wanted skinnies -yes
but no not really (I want 35's)

What pressure do you run, and have you tried the 4psi thing?

yes I have had them down to 5psi on sand... they handle AWFUL!! I gave them a hard time too..
They roll badly when cornering on bitumen, I mean real bad.. they only way for them to be drivable is to run them at 45psi and up.. yes this has contributed to the wear, but its not the only reason.. the centre of the tread is not as deep as the outside, I also have them on the smallest width rim they can run.. a wider rim would help and leaving @ 30 psi or so as well, but they are truly scary to drive at that pressure If you mostly drive offroad/gravel they would be a great tyre.. I found them to drive great on dirt roads, I drove the 100 like i was racing for first place in a rally (something i have managed before ) they take corners and are very predictable, but only on dirt.. not a good all round tyre. Good in mud too providing it's not more than 10 inches deep because they sink instantly..

7.50R16 rags go alright, I have Doublestars on my troopy, acceptable on road and have chunky tread that actually goes pretty good in the mud. For something even chunkier with rather large sidebiters, have a look at Otani 7.50R16s.

The Doublestars cost $195 each, including tube and rustband. Now for the only thing that shits me about bias tyres, after the vehicle has been sitting for a while - especially in cold weather it seems - is they get a flat spot and it takes a km or two for them to become round again, makes the whole vehicle shake like a wet dog until they''re round.
MRF also have tyres with this type of tread pattern too.

I got rid of them straight after i drove on them in the wet. Just to give you an idea of the level of grip they offer (or lack thereof), i drifted my then 36rwkw TD42 GQ wagon around an on ramp at 80km/h.
They appeared to be a very soft "gummy" compound, so i'm sure they have their place in a select offroad terrain, but for on road - not for me.

lol.. I could drift my non turbo diesel cruiser in the wet too.. ever try emergency braking in the wet???
I have some fair driving skills so I can deal with the lack of grip , I just don't let anyone else drive my truck (good excuse actually.. it's not safe so u can't drive it!)

I've never been game to try a "handbrakie" in my GQ - the last trans patrol i saw do that ended up with a corkscrew tailshaft. handbrake in a 100 series.. lol nah! they are hard pressed to stop it from rolling away on flat ground. I just use a 2nd gear compression lock then add my masses of power lol.

Gravedig/update: Don't bother with the Doublestars, not even 7000 kms and they're just about worn out, rears are almost bald in the middle and the fronts have a real weird wear pattern with the tread blocks scalloping out.
