oil mixed with coolant
If your hearing bubbles and there was mud in the radiator .. how long do you think the head gaskes had been on its way out... you were probably getting air out of the cylinder ( where the leak was ) and it was ending up in your cooling system, giving you a constant air lock .. so it was just re filling every time u ran the engine .. surprised it went as far as it did ..
did you find oil in the coolant ... ie mud.. hot oil and water goes a sludge texture.. when they mix ... there really isnt any way for that volume of dirt to get in there... i know when i wsa younger i for got to re tigheten the head bolts and had a huge gasket blow out .. on the princess highway .. car shit it self .. and had the oil and mud situation you described ...
Good luck with it
cheers

Just to expand a bit on what Mick wrote, when the block was drilled for the oil lines to the heads, it would appear that they missed the casing and drilled into one of the coolant lines. With the heads off and the cooling system under pressure, cooland freely flows through the oil galleys.
The question is - would this cause the block to overheat boiling on one side and cause the head to go soft?

If they`re going to fill the hole and redrill it , they would have to drill it out large enough to fit the mig or tig , which would need to be a very big hole , then they have to weld and have on flaws , clever chaps .
Look into it short term fixes as easy. think you`ve been pissed about enough . My opinion . pete
Yr 100% right pete!!
IMHO i would have a hissy and get a new block from them.... then if they want to fix the other and palm it of to another poor sucker i don't go 4bying with
