Diesel Hilux Not Charging!

Post by dans-paj92 »

Hey all,
I have a 2.4D toyota hilux and when you put the multimeter onto the battery while the car is running it does not charge.
Even when its then given more revs theres no change.
Off the positive terminal off the alternator im getting 11.8volts and 12.3volts straight off the battery.
So is this because the voltage regulator is faulty?
Or do I need a new alternator?
Cheers
Dan

Try swapping the reg if you have a spare should be external next to ur fuse box under the bonnet i think from memory or i might be mixed up with something else?, but id just go to the auto elec and let him tell you whats wrong and go home n fix/replace whatever is needed.

Or get him to rebuild the alternator if its nessesary... can be expensive though.

i was thinking the regulator.
Or is there a fuse that might need replacing??
The bushes are brand new in the alternator, unless the magnet has gone?
cheers

you can test the regulator off the vehicle with your multimeter. if you have a manual it shows you how to check the resistance (i think) between various terminals and this tells you if its operating correctly or not.

if you dont have a manual, let me know and ill try to scan that page and post it up tomorrow.

also chcek for a fuse, i have had a petty lux which blew a fuse when put in reverse which in turn stopped the alt charging... you never know with old vehicles.

Should be enough diagnostic reference info here to get you on the right track.

i took the voltage regulator out of the diesel and stuck it in the petty one and kicked her over.
It read over 13V on my autometer volts meter.
So it mustnt be the voltage regulator.
is there a fuse that could be the problem?
Cheers

the fuse that controls the alt is the main engine fuse aswell, so if its running its not that. You said the brushes are new, are they brand new, have you been through any mud, id be pulling them out and checking them, could be sticky.

took it completely apart and cleaned it with carbie cleaner (aerosol can)
and put it back together.
The local auto elec said the bushes were near new and gave me 2 new ones that i got installed.
cheers
