140KW from a 2.8 diesel

Post by Outer Limits Hilux »

After reading the nissan ection, these guys are running 15 to 20psi on relatively stock motors and gaining shit loads of power.

i can't stop but to think, screw a v8, bomb the diesel. i'm thinking port and polish, better valve springs, balanced crank, turbo pistons, thicker head gasket, better bearings all over and a custon BB turbo to run on about 20 psi. i allready have a massive radiator (79 series) with a 3000cfm thermo hanging off it, a large size front mount and a safari tuff clutch. This setup should keep it all sweet.

However the turbo will be operated by a dual stage boost control so i can switch to say 10psi when not needed.

is this a great idea or am i just asking for trouble.... keep in mind it only gets used on the weekends, maybe once a fortnight.
Wanted.... 4.88 or 4.56 front GQ diff center. Also wanted... GQ rear diff complete.

id be interested to see because im in the same boat i have a spare 2.8 i was going to rebuild but i also have a vt roller motor and a conversion kit. I would like to see a crazy hp 3L but i may not be worth the out lay when a close to stock 5ltr will double any 2.8

IMO why bother? all of that would set you back 5k or therabouts for that cost you could put in a 1uz, or GM 5.0 and have the same type of hp from a stock motor.

Less stress better reliability, and a heap of other pluses. I guess if you really want to then yeh why not but I really dont see the point.

How are you going to vary the fuel between 10 PSI & 20PSI???

it will need a boost compensator which is not cheap. the biggest drawback to this project is cost versus power benefits and reliability. That's why most people go v8. If you want to stick with diesel get a 1kz. bit more work but a much better motor to start with.

140Kw from a 2.8?

Better go for a 1kz, then play around on that when and if you get bored.

the td42 is a very old and strong design with extreamly thick castings in tthe head
the 3L (2.8) already has head issues in NA form
