After working in Weipa, Mt isa was a welcome break Theres 'the irish' not to bad a pub. Pick which area you live in, i started in Pioneer lots of goverment housing and the drunken trash that goes with it. Theres some good fun to be had out there with the 4bys. The best spot I found was out towards the power station then head north first gate on your right. Theres some good boulders out there to play on. Theres all the hills to play on as you leave town heading towards NT on the right.

There is heaps of good 4WDing to do out there. Good fishing too.
Unfortunately I only get to go there a couple of times a year.

If you really want to get out into the wild, do a bit of research on an old mine called The Gilded Rose, south east of Cloncurry. Its on a property that was, or maybe still part owner by my ex brother in laws brother (Noel Robertson- ex mayor of The Curry) The property name was Roundoak. Interesting place to have a bit of a fossick over. Years ago, my brother and I found an old torpedo bottle there, intact and complete with marble inside.

As for the Isa, plenty of tracks out towards Lake Maraboon. And the Isa is a well stocked, if not inexpensive place to live. Just be careful if you have kids, as parts of the town have very high lead levels in the soil.

Houses can be rented for less since the economic downturn. Feel sory for the guy that bought at the end of last year.

I will be out here for another year some great places to hit tracks and camp as well.

There is a also a great track out through a place called fountain springs- the Ballara track, suicide in the wet but awesome in the dry, few old abandoned mines and small towns as well.

Cheers

ps pick up a book called "cloncurry trails", has alot of the more well known tracks.
