Part-time kit 80 series {Fuel consumption}
Quick question guys and girls, friend has asked me for some info regarding his full-time 80, pros and cons converting to part-time. What were the fuel consumption differences as this is his primary reason for the change.

On a different angle, tell him to fit standard toyota freewheel hubs if he can make them fit. I've never heard any good reports about the freewheeling hubs that come in these kits. Remove the front driveshaft, lock the centre diff lock and drive around for a week or so and see how it goes, I was planning to convert my 80 to part time but ended up deciding not to, I had the front shaft out to replace the unis and it ended up being out for almost a week with a few ordered parts which were incorrect when they arrived.
Its hard to explain but I just didn't like the way it handled in 2WD, even around town it just felt like the rear end was pushing the front around (can't think of a better way of explaining it) but with full time the thing handles like its on tracks. I'm not talking about driving it hard here, even at low speed I just didin't like the way it felt.
On the other hand lots of people have the part time kit and love it, there are a few others like me who have tried it and decided not to change.

tas80, I just did the same thing, while fixing front drive shaft. Removed it and pushed the centre diff button.
And it drove like crap. Wondered, under steer, oversteer etc.. BUT... I still didnt have the freewheeling hubs fitted. So the wheels where still turning the axles and diff centre creating gyro effects, making the front end drive funny. I have driven my mates 80 with the full kit "the freewheeling hubs and propper transfercase diff fitted" and drives very nicely.

having cdl locked or part time kit in transfer wont change how it drives its more about what is spinning up front
i have 2 different 80's 1 full time 1 part time the part time one i can not really tell when the hubs are in i do have a double cardigan though
my part time 80 is a ute so a fair bit lighter than std and is fine to drive
the GXL 80 with full time is much better with full time
especially when towing or in wet weather
i had front shaft out and drive flanges removed during a repair also
it tended to spin the back tyres a lot as well
