80 series gearbox buzz?

Post by Bundy79 »

Morning all.

I have recently upgraded the ole bundy to a 93 80 series. I have noticed that there was an intermittent grind noise from the gearbox and today i was traveling along at 100+km/hr and it turned into a full blown grind/whirring/buzzing noise.

After soiling my tweeds and stopping it went away again, i finished the journey back into town with only the intermittent/random buzz sound.

Any ideas, i have booked it into Toyota, as i have little choice where I live but they have jipped me before.

Cheers

while on the free way and teh buzz is happening try just holding the low hi lever mine had a buzz type rattle in it it was quite loud
i just fiddled with it ie. tightened the knob a bit then selected it in and out and it goes away
also try the gear stick they can rattle as well

Front or rear? Mines making that noise aswell, when Im somewhere between accel and engine brake. Just in the middle there is a grind and vibration.

its a feature of the 80s, just to remind you that you are driving one of the finest 4x4s known to man

mine tends to seem like it comes from the transfer case lever, but it is bearing or gear noise, not the transfer case lever, although it some times rattles about.

Front left was the specific culprit, but both were pretty empty. all it needed was the right angle or bump and it would grind away hence when i stopped or bounced on the loud pedal it went away for a while. It was a totally random event. Do you get yours every time you decelerate?

Yep. Mine happens everytime I coast along. Under engine braking or acceleration its fine. I have already changed my rear uni's and removed my front drive shaft and its still there. Its either in the rear diff or the gearbox "I think"

Hey Yeah! my 80 had the same problem, its the mainshaft bearing in your
