Anchor points

Was looking to fit a 3rd child seat to my GU patrol wagon and realised there is nowhere to mount the anchor point in the middle. ( 2nd row). Have had a chat to child restraint station who explained seat is not engineered to take a restraint in the centre and also is where the 2 seats meet ( 50/50 split) so restraint would fall between the seats. There is no option to mount to the roof either, so only option is a 'crab bar' where all three restraints can be fitted. However the rear seats would have to be removed as they would be a hazard to anyone in the 3rd row seats.
Has anybody heard of any other way to fit a 3rd anchor point, without losing the 3rd row seats?

I'd imagine that the child restraint guy would be the one to listen to.

Also don't see how you would go getting people into the 3rd row of seats anyway with the 3 child seats in other than trying to clamber over the seat from the back doors

will only be kiddies gettin in the back anyway, but just seeing if there are any other options.

I think they my have to use a taxi bar I have seen them used in 60 series as the standard 60 series mounting point do not meet the standard.


The only person I would be talking to about it would be a certifing engineer.

They can be mounted in the roof near the back door.

3 can be mounted in the roof, there are existing holes that the approved installers use. They are the ones who gave me this info.

I just had mine done on the passenger side as the rear drawers covered the existing points. Cost $95 including cutting the cargo barrier and installing a shroud. Engineer approved too.

found 2 of 3 in roof near barn doors. where is the middle one? the section in the middle steps in for the barn doors latch and there is only a small hole for the plastic plugs that hold in the roof lining, definatly not strong enough for a restraint..

Here in Qld you can get them fitted and blue plated. Should be the same down your way. They normally drill a hole into the floor than use a big plate under the floor and a child anchor setup.

its the seat that is the prob not the floor.the strap would slip between the seats and crush the child and seat in a bad accident. like the idea of fitting in roof rather than crab bar, but can't figure out where the centre point is ? thinking maybe a of type of load leaveling strap between left and right roof mounting points. gonna look for another restraint fitting station who can help more.

talked to another fitting station today. can fit 3 points to roof crossmember at rear near barn doors. the left and right have a hole already, but the middle one has to have a hole drilled and a plate inserted with a bolt welded to it and pop riveted in. a small hole in the trim also has to be cut to mount the anchor point. was quoted $100 to get done and signed off. very handy also for anyone with drawer systems..

If it's a late model with original 3rd row seats, check the floor behind the passenger side 3rd row seat, as they now have a 3rd anchorage, for that position. If there is one, it'll have a plastic plug in it and it'll be on the flat of the floor in the middle of the carpet. Pull the plug out and there will already be a 5/16 UNC captive nut ready to bolt the anchorage in.

If you want a centre anchorage for the 2nd row, it can only be done by installing it above the top edge of the seat. I have certified a few installations in late model Patrols - a shaped plate with the captive nut welded on is inserted into the roof frame adjacent to the interior light.

However it's done, you cannot use any restraint on the split position if the restraint deflects over the seat back, because if the belt moves into the split, the belt will loosen and change direction, which may cause strangulation from a child harness, or failure of the structure of a capsule.

hey athol, only after the centre mount for the 2nd row, i have seen the 3rd row point on passenger side .
where is the shaped plate and nut welded? is it the kind of 'c' type channel around 100mm approx from back of 2nd row seats that the row of plastic lugs that join the roof liner together and onto the roof, clip into?
can this be done at home then checked and approved? or does it have to be done by a authorised fitter? because all the fitting stations the rta supplied me with around penrith have very minimal knowlage on modifying or adding extra anchor points and seem to be leading me in the wrong direction.
