FJ40 Wheel Questions

Hi
Im getting my 1st FJ40 and currently has 35" tyres and I know these are illegal in QLD or all the states unless engineered.
So what is the biggest wheel I can get for the forty?
What is the stock tyre profile? is the PCD 6x139.7mm
Do 6 stud hilux rims fit?

33s should be fine, if you are in Brisbane Ryan0 from Fourby's at Moorooka, (he posts on here) has been to court to fight to get 33" tyres on a customers car. So they are the ones to buy them from. (I beleive it was on a Patrol) but it should be okay.

And just to clarify. Solid Axle hilux rims will fit. IFS hilux rims won't.

What does your tyre placard say, (if you have one?)

If it says 7.5R16, you can legally run some 33" tyres.

YOu can legally have +15mm, but, thus applies to the recognised and accepted overall diametre of the tyre specified on your tyre placard.

It is not actually (7.5" x 2(sidewalls) + 16"(rim)), it is whatever the tyre and rim association of australia says it is.

Which from the Tyre and Rim Associatiuon Manual of 2002(only copy i have), a 7.50R16LT tyre for a traction tread, is 819mm (32.24")

+15mm means 32.83"

Which some 33" tyres actually measure.

not sure if its still has the tyre placard on.
Any FJ40 owners who can confirm this?
If anyone can take a good pic of the tyre placard I can maybe get it replicated?

prior to 1978 or 1976 tyre placards werent required.

So it might have never had one.

so what is the stock FJ40 wheel size?
I called my mechanic and told me that the legal size for it is 31"

I know 31s will be fine for sure
just heaps of 4bys I see have 33s and I think 33s will look and drive better with the FJ
and I'll just use my 35s when going on newbie tracks

thats why I want to know the stock wheel size and the biggest legal I can use for sure.

The original size for the Fj40-45/Bj40-47 was 7.50r16 which was very close to 32". Some markets, notably the americans, got a 29" tyre on their Fj, but 3.7:1 diffs were introduced to give them better highway speed as opposed to the 4.11:1 which came standard across the range here.

31" is slightly smaller than the original. 32" is legal, small 33"s fit, but really stand out because of the smaller size of the car compared with patrols and later cruisers. Especially when being inspected by the constabulary.

Just make one up from the first car you come across. I just had a search through my trayback and there is nothing. I know there wasnt anything on the '79 shorty i had, and i cant see anything on the 86 hj61. They all came out with the same 7.50r16.

Thats right, so overall diameter is legal to 819+15mm=834mm
The BFG Mud terrain T/A KM2 in a 33x12.5x15 have an overall diameter of 826mm.
The BFG All Terrain 33x12.5x15 had an overall diameter of 802mm
Mickey Thompson Baja Radial MTZ 33x12.5x15 is 833mm
So you can run 33x12.5x15 legally then

yeh, there are some 33's that are too big, but generally 33's are fine.

As long as, when the copper asks you, you mention tyre and rim association manual.

Coppers wont have any idea, and might defect you anyway, but the QLD transport boys, especially the ones that work the pits have a good understanding and have thier own copy of the Tyre and Rim Association manual which is what they use to determine max tyre size.

late models's came with chromed tubeless types aswell.

Well after about 10 phone calls to bob janes, qld transport, qld transport inspector, qld police i have found that 32x11.5x15 is the biggest legal. When you were talking before about the "Tyre and Rim Associatiuon Manual of 2002(only copy i have), a 7.50R16LT tyre for a traction tread, is 819mm (32.24")" They said that they use the highway tread which equals 804mm becuase it is for buses and vehicles. The traction tread is only for ag vehicles, tractors and is not the size they use for the fj40. Correct me if im wrong as im getting the 32x11.5x15 on monday.

Sorry the measurement for highway terrain in 808mm. it doesn't matter what the manufacture size is for the tyres all that matters is the Tyre and Rim Association Manual. So all 33" tyres are over the limit of 808+15. You can still use 33" but u wont be covered for insurance if u crash and cops can fine u. Unless ur not in qld then i have no idea.

im pretty sure its 32 unless u can say that the standard tyre was a traction tread then its a 33 max everyone says that its 32 max. They dont care about the manufactures specs only the standard 33" tyre size in the manual compared to ur original specs.

I really hate the laws!!
I got a sheet that says that the optional tyre on an fj40 is a 7.50-16LT 6-108n with OD of 827. This means that running 33's should be ok but i spoke to the inspector again and he said...
they ply ratings have to be the same
the overall diameter need to be under the limit
The track measurement cannot be more then 2" wider then standard.
The speed rating needs to be the same
And then he said that you cannot fit anyother tyre to the fj40 except the 7.50-16lt. WTF i dont know what to do.

Well i have done alot of research now and i have found that;
The service numbers are all good.
Load rating: Toyota 108 Maxxis 108
Speed rating: Toyota N (140km/h) Maxxis Q (160km/h)
Ply rating: Toyota 6 Maxxis 6
Overall diameter of toyota optional fj40 827mm
Overall diameter allowable 827+15=842mm
Maxxis overall diameter is 32.9" =835.66mm
Not 100% sure of that the rim and tyre manual say about this but it should be less that 842mm for 33x12.5x15 (someone check)
Tyres and rims must not protude the body work: Mine has been modified to fit 13.5" wide rims so no worrys there.
Tyres must have at least 1.5mm tread. Dont think we need to worry with the 16mm of m/t's
Offroad vehicles with front and rear beam axles max tyre witdh must not be over 1.5 times the manufactures widest optional tyre. Not 100% sure what the original width is but say 8.5"wide gives you 12.75 so thats all good.
Vehicle track is measured from center of one tyre to the center of the other.
Offroad vehicles can have a 50mm increase in track measurement.
Toyota front: 1440 rear: 1435 Mine not 100% sure but i think its 1450 need to check again but it should be fine.
