GQ INJECTED PETROL GETTING HOT - FAN CLUTCH ??
GQ INJECTED PETROL GETTING HOT - FAN CLUTCH ??
hi, i have a gq with a tb42e in it and auto, when under load gets bloody hot, ie big hills, up the beach in sand etc. it is body blocked, however mates who have the same combo dont have heating problems...
i have so far replaced the thermostat, waterpump and spent 3 hrs cleaning the radiator inside and out... so wondering if anyone can shed some light on this for me?
i pulled my fan clutch off to re silicone it but it seems to be a fully sealed unit...
cheers tyler.

Unlike the cruisers the patrol viscus hub isnt able to be re oiled. I bought a davis craig one over 6 years ago and have never had over heating issues also all the other bits you've mentioned have been replaced or properly cleaned out!
Worth getting a new one, not sure on price though as it was quite dear when I got it!
May pay to get the raidiator check out properly to as the chores may be blocked as mine were!

get a transmission cooler.
I had same problem, on a carby 4.2 though, and as soon as I fitted a trans cooler to it problem vanished.
Had tried everything before that, thermostat, new radiator, checked heads and gasket etc.
make sure you set it up so that the lines go from the transmission straight to the aftermarket cooler then through your radiator and back to the transmission.
If you didn't know, the factory set up uses your radiator to cool transmission fluid. As soon as you put load on the transmission it gets hot as buggery and heats up engine coolant.
$150 should get you a pretty decent big one and fit that in front of your air con radiator. I had to piss the AC thermo off to do it but my AC is rooted anyway. It's only there to draw air through if you're sitting still with the AC running anyway.

Thanks for the advice everyone, i have removed my viscous fan and shroud, and fitted AU thermo's, i wired the A/C helper thermo to a relay with ign switching, and used the signal that is from the ecu for the cut in on the AC helper fan to trigger 2 relays that drive each of the AU thermos, i then put an override switch in cab so i can manually switch them on too, i put a diode in the ecu signal wire so when i manually switch them on it doesnt backfeed 12v into the computer.
The AC helper fan cuts in when the temp gauge reaches the halfway mark, regardless of the AC actually being used or not, so really is just a factory fitted thermo...
The reason i chose to go with the thermos regardless was because it was about 280 cheaper than a new fan clutch, and as it is body blocked the shroud had a massive gap between the blades of the fan, and finally, this slug of a thing needs all the power it can get!!!
anyway, i am still going to fit an ext oil cooler, and plum it back into the orig radiator cooler too, replace my hoses, and get the tanks off the radiator and get is flushed properly.
il keep you posted.
cheers Tyler.

Hi mate,
Keep us informed...
I have the same setup - 4.2 injected auto... running warm.
I replaced the viscous hub, new fan.
Unfortunaely the hub had alot of oil in the packaging with it. i contacted the shop who said they ship them like that to prevent rust etc. but i was worried it had leaked. it felt no different to the other one i took off. it didnt help with the prob.
I have now got a re-cored radiator with the factory cooler, and an external tranny cooler (biggest davies craig one). replaced all hoses, water pump thermostat.
Mine gets hot at slow speeds and lows revs... like lights after a hill etc.... get cool as soon as it is running gently again. So looks to be airflow related to me.
I put thermos on my last patrol.... no probs. But this time i went with all the advice to keep the factory setup, and replace it to the original standard.... but no i am considering trying thermos again to fix this issue.
Cheers

I'm not sure how tight the new hubs are meant to be but after i refilled my original, the fan runs as normal in weather up to around 25 degrees but any higher (yesterday was 29) it really howels and sucks a lot of air through the rad especially when driving at 100km/hr and aircon.
Yes it does suck some power but it keeps the gq cool. I also found the aircon to work a lot better.
Cheers
PS: I also did this mod to my r33 skyline with even better results than the gq

You can pull apart some patrol viscouse hubs and others you have to drill a couple of holes and tap them to refill with oil. You can buy the oil from Toyota spare parts.
Had the same problem with the GU. I changed viscouse hub to a new one, did not work so bought a new radiator and it fixed it. Rule of thumb is if the radiator is ten or more years old throw it away.

hey everyone, just an update, with the new adrad manual radiator (500), pwr oil cooler (150), new hoses (35), temp sender (12), and au thermos (100) it seems to be behaving!!! around town sits 2mm below half, on motorway gets to between half and 2mm above, then under massive load going up razorback 1st pinned for 6km got to 3/4.
yet to go up the beach and give it a test, but 1st im going to pull the new thermostat out and make sure they gave me the right one. probably something i should have done 1st, but when it is new you overlook auto1 human error.
il let ya know how it goes.
