Turbo 1hz smells

Post by Feass »

Hey all,

I got a turbo 1hz in a 100 series - 203k on the odo. has a DTS kit on it. Starts cold and hot like its brand new. BUT its blows smoke, like a really thin light blue smoke when you plant it. If you leave it idle for abit it will do it aswell. The smell is awful, absolutely REEKS! It also uses a bit of oil. Blow by is minimal aswell.

Im leaning towards the valve stem seals? OR the engine oil is too thin?

Pump and inj have just recently been done aswell.

Thanks.

It doesn't sound like the valve stem seals. Those are usually obvious by a big puff of smoke at startup (cold) when a significant amount of oil has entered the cylinder (ie when left overnight)

You should do a leak down test to check the valves and rings are alright first. Otherwise it sounds like the turbo seals, and possibly the pcv hose.

Some people run catch cans for the pcv rather than plumbing into the intake for this reason (and others).

Oil should probably be 15-40 unless you're in the hot desert. It should also be changed every 5 thousand kays, as the oil is broken down well before 10k

I have an engine that has been doing something like that aswell. Im leaning toward the turbo seals or crankcase breather. Mine uses next to no oil and the main time I notice is when its loaded ( with a heap of wind resistance) and is held flat for about 10 mins or so, when I stop is when I notice the smoke. Mine is a hilux 2L motor.

If your driving normally and pull over and go have a wiff at the exhaust, there is no odour or anything, just feels like hot air... but when you give it the beans, its gets a bit of smoke..?
