Agressive tyres to suit 16"split rims

As the title states, i'm wanting to find an aggressive tread pattern tyre that will suit a 16"x 5.5" rim.

I'm currently run 315 75's on 16"rims on a turbo diesel 80 series and happy with the current gearing. I would like to find a tyre with a similar diameter and similar tread pattern, just skinner.

hmmm thats not quite 35" tall the ones ya running .....

5.5 inch splits are a lil on the narrow side for tall tyres ..... 9R16 you may be able to squeeze on ...

think you will most likely be limited to 750r16 on 5.5 splittie ....

If you win lotto you should be able to afford some Michelin's. They are very expensive. There are other alternatives in the 9.00 16 size but they will not be speed rated for your car. These include bar treads, custom xtra grips and a few others. I doubt you will get a skinny tyre as tall as what you currently have. Mud Terrains come in 255/85 16 which is around 33 inches or so. That is most likely your best bet.

the biggest tyre you can put on a 5.5 wide rim off the shelf is 750-16 or 235/85r16.

900-16 wont fit up properly to that narrow a rim.

there should be some superswampers that fit. check their narrow range.

9/34 16 swamper. They are not ideal on a 5.5" rim, but they'll be OK.

Bogged, the 315's are mtz's and i'm not super happy with the wear rate, durability or driveability.
My tyres currently have 20k km's on them and i can't see them lasting longer then 45k km's. I have cracks opening inside the tread blocks in all different direction which in no way could be from cut and nicks from use and i have already done 2 sidewalls of mtz's.

I'm wanting a tyre with a super strong side wall, split rim because of the practicalities (tyre tubes take up less room then 2 spares on touring trips) plus i love the stock standard look, and something that will wear better then the MTZ's.

I've had swampers before on my hilux and they are an awesome tyre. I'm not sure if they are up to touring duties ( i probably should have mentioned that at the beginning.)

What happens here? I don't picture Stumpy crossing deserts at 90psi, and I presume the load carrying capacity decreases as pressure decreases.

What sort of pressure do you need to run to get a decent increase in footprint? I imagine 12ply tyres are quite stiff, so you'd be talking a low pressure? If this is the case, how much load can the tyre still carry reliably?

the 900-16 tyre shown in the above link is no longer available, it is now a 4 block tread that is less aggresive.

the 750-16 is still the good 3 block tread

1405kg is a huge load on each tyre a touring 80 series probably only has 900kg max each corner

Hi,
the ll62 on here looks similar to what you're after. I wouldn't be putting 9r's on 5.5's if you want durability. just stick with 7.50's. these are about a 32.3 inch tyre so gearing should be similar. I am getting these for xmas for the same reasons; easy to change/repair yourself and they are tough as!.

i ran the CR857, scroll down for pics, for prob 30K on the rear of my ute, which has alot of weight on it, 2.6 metre steel tray, gas and diesel tanks, 3 tool boxes, all carpentry gear including compressor and drop saw behind axle etc, and i think i coulda scraped probably another 25 til they were absolutely shagged.
they were scarily shit on the front though, which i think is an issue you will experience with alot of tyres like this.
i ran them at 55PSI, max load at 80 of about 1400KG from memory, and they still crowned and wore more in the centre.
i think cooper do a discoverer S/T in the same size? would be worth a look, awesome touring tyre in my opinion, old man has done plenty of trips on them, and ive done some serious rock work with them, cut them to shit, but they held out better than most of my mates tyres.

the old man did SE QLD to broome through the NT and pretty well didnt touch bitumen for most of it, tour guide on mickeys got 2 punctures and he got none, wear on the coopers isnt as good as they say, but its good for how grippy they are.



oh, the other one i just thought of, cause i ahve one brand new on in the shed i got as a spare when i bought my other splitties is the bridgestone mud-dueler. nearly 400 bucks a tyre though, ive got one going cheap if you go this way :lol:

The tyre in Stumpy's post looks like a super gripper by Dunlop, dunno if they are still made but I used to use them on a SWB GQ. Had a good run out of them, got about 80-90 thosand km outta them but I got pissed off by flats in the last 18 mths of their life. My fault keeping old tubes going (10 yrs +). Found repairs hard as the split rim seemed to rust onto the tyre, breaking the beads was the hardest part of the repair. Since then I've gone to 16 by 6 Maveric rims with tubeless tyers and carry a plug tool for repairs, its a lot easier on me physically.

are boggers too agressive? seen them on the stock yota split rims think they were similar size to the swampers at 34x9r16 (maybe) I've got pics somewhere but not handy atm.

only problem with the boggers is absolutely no road manners. I'm hanging out to go to 34 swampers on splits when my cooper AT's are done. no more changing tyres on the 40 then! :P
