New Chassis/VIN Number Stamped

Post by c110gtr »

Hi

What's the reason why would QLD Transport put a new chassis number on a car.
I'm looking at this 4by and there's a metal plate welded on the passenger side tip of the chassis, and a Mod plate with the new chassis number on it.
13 digit, it starts with Q1NVAAAxxxxxx
The original manufacturer's plate is still on the firewall though.

Anyone ???

Usually it's because the vehicle has been stolen and recovered they assign a new vehicle identification number. If it's a late model car be weary, it can affect resale. But if 10years old I can't see it making much of a difference

its a 1977 Fj40, but why would they re-stamped it when the original id plates is still there.
The previous owner said because of the power steering? which I think doesnt make sense or he doesnt know what he's talking about.
The new number is on the rego certificate so QLD transport confirmed it already

beacase the original VIN has been cancelled for some reason, which is why they issue a new VIN, the compliance plate is usually removed but I've never seem them remove a build plate so the chassis number stays the same...Trust me i'm a used car salesman ;)

if the chassis no cannot be found, in this case maybe due to the powersteering conversion you mention it may have been covered up, they can issue new numbers for a number of reasons.

the number on the body and the chassis are separate items allowing body changes etc and tracability of parts, everything sounds normal to me and would not stop me owning it. I went through a similiar process in vic years ago and needed both chassis and engine no's to be re issued as none could be found on the truck. ;)

it should be all legal as the stamp on the chassis is the same as the mod plate.
Cool I rest easy now that I know this is OK, thought something dodgy

if the plate mathces the most recent registration certificate I can't see any concerns for a 77FJ40

it does so all good
the stamp is just on the tip of the passenger side chassis rail and its covered with the front bar/winch. Had to take it off to see and match whats on the certificate and mod plate.
