HJ61, strange noise when 4x4ing...

Post by RockyF75 »

Went out and tackled a decent hill for the first time in a while the other day, and the old girl was bouncing around a fair bit. Each time I hit a large enough bump there was this high pinch, sort of whining sound. It has not happened before or since, only happens when hitting a bump offroad. My first thought was the engine fan hitting on something.

But I've checked gearbox and engine mounts, they all look fine. Tried moving the radiator, it has no play in it. The shroud has a tiny bit of play in it but not enough to come even close to the fan.

I'm a bit stumped as to what to look for :? It did sound like it was coming from the front but I've been pretty bad with picking noises in the past.

Is there enough body/chassis flex in these things to move the shroud ~2cm closer to the fan in rough stuff?

Anyone had similar noise come from somewhere else? Couldn't be anything in the driveline could it?

Those who choose to drive in the mud do so because they can't drive the rocks.

how long did the noise last for? and was it a scraping sound or a true whining like a bearing going?

Only lasted for a very short time, like something was getting knocked into something else when I'd hit a bump.

Didn't sound like a bearing, as it wasn't rev dependant, it was definately triggered by the bumps. More of a scraping sound, just high pitched.

i have had the driveshaft flange rub on the gearbox cross member making a noise like that

normally only happens on steep inclines when the drive train is loaded
it could be due to your eng/ gearbox mounts being spongy or old or broken

have a look for any signs of rubbing around the driveshafts

id go with that too, otherwise maybe the front leaves rubbing where they normally wouldnt. Get a bit of rust and other foreign material in there and it can make a nasty noise.

my leaves have worked the ends of them selves into the next leaf(except the two main leafs so it not a big problem.

but when i turn, or use the suspension they make a clicky bump noise. so check your leaves to see if they have worn their way into each other.

Put it up on the hoist today, no scuff marks or anything anywhere near either drive shafts.

Front springs could be a possibility, I know the bushes need replacing. But by the noise I think i'm going to stick with the fan somehow hitting something. Going to have to take it out 4x4ing again to try and narrow it down... or break whatever's making the noise completely

Did you actually lever up the engine mounts? You often need to move the engine to see that they are broken.
