3ltr GU Noisy Belt(?) Squeal

Post by hdn177 »

Hey all,

Hoping for some help with a squealing noise when cold.
Since Ive had it once or twice did a small squeal when starting cold. Touch of silcon spray and away it went for a week or so.

Last week, the noise came and stayed. CHanged belt 1st up. Still there once it was cold next day. Had the alternator changed next. Again next morning start the truck. Its back again.

Mechanic said suspect tensioner so replaced that with a o/e tensioner. Again next morning sounds back! I have left the truck with workshop to start it todayin hope the sound will re occur. The squeal does dissaper after its warmed up maybe 5 minutes of driving time.
Any more ideas?

From reading other posts it seams to be a common occurrence with the 2 parts I have already changed. Next bet is aircon or water pump (gut feeling is on aircon). Just dont want mechanic to keep taking me for a ride and keep fixing "BROKEN" parts but the noise is still there.

Sorry for the long winded post.

Here is a recording of it.

the alternator has a one way clutch on it and it can squeal like that when its about to die,
check the tensioner first as these are replaced all the time, check ya wallet as there about $300.

O/e belt seems to have fixed this sound. Washed down motor, cleaned all pulleys. And a O/e belt. Which in fact has different shaped ribs, and is shorter than what repco sold me. No noise yet!

Have heard the same with oe belts. Others can be a tiny bit wider and rub on pulley. Not just Patrols either but very common for them.
