I (and 1-2 others on here) run a VG30DET turbo, which is very similar to the RB30ET unit, with the exception of ceramic turbine wheel.

It should be just fine. You can also get some cheap upgrades for those units as they are so damned common with the fully-sick boys.

yepo, and you can get a high flowed G-unit cheap as well.

You have to watch your boost with the ceramic units dont you coxy?

Correct!!

About 12psi safely. Any more and you risk the wheel coming apart. I got quoted about $1200 to have my unit rebuilt, high-flowed and to have the turbine wheel replaced with a steel unit. (Turbo Engineering Thomastown)

I actually damaged my wheel when i was inspecting it prior to installation (be very careful when removing the exhaust housing!), taking a mall chip of a blade, thats why i haven't upped the boost yet. I imagine that ANY increased pressure on my unit will either end in a bearing or wheel failure.

I've been keeping my eye out for a replacement turbo - but these suckers are as rare as hens teeth! The only place i've seen them pop up is on some of the Skyline/Silvia forums as they use these as upgrades from the factory unit.

Its been a long while since i've driven it, but from memory it started to come on boost around 1600-1800, and tapers off around 3000, however i am only running a stock pump (no boost compensator or upped fuel yet) so the higher RPM power loss might only be due to no fuel up there.

If i ever do get the spare coin to do something about the turbo, i'll probably get the unit i have done up as it will save any further costs/headaches having to re-do turbo flanges, dump pipes, oil/water lines etc. A physically mismatched turbo could easily cost an extra $1000 if i had to re-do any of those parts.

mines a t3 off a vl been high flowed with steel comp wheels and ball bearing internals work really well come on boost from 1200 hits 10 psi by 2ooorpm only problem is the dump pipe waste gate set up (cutting and welding cast). and most t3 vl turbos will crack the rear housing were the waste gate hits. i would blank it off and run and external gate...

ahh and thats the problem

I run a t04, and you wont see much boost his side of 2200, but you can hear it coming along, and then once it open's one of its lazy eyes, if will start to boost 2500, and then it really comes on like a train, all the way to the limiter. It produces huge power at 3000 rpm, and upwards..

(this below is what i've web wheeled, so there I might be wrong in a couple of areas, however, its up to you to find out lol)

If you can, lots of people are going for the turbo XR6 GT35/40, which seams to be a good deal. Im almost 100% sure Cookiemonster is running one of these, i think. However, also drop on to mud rhyno and talk to Evan, and see what turbo he uses, as he gets good boost early one

The XR6T units are too big for a TD42. They're probably ideal for a TB42 though.

We're talking about using the turbo off a VL and using it on a TD42 - not using a VL turbo motor (RB30ET) in a Patrol.
