Welding up front diff on 91 lux. tips and advice pls
Ok so I have just put in a 253, and am in the process of changing the diff gears from the stock 4.88's to 3.5's I have a nice tight LSD in the rear, and am comsidering welding up the front when i get it out. I have welded up a diff before, and already rebuilt the rear diff so I am happy that I know what to do. I also have got my welding tickets so i know what to do there as well, I'd like to know anyone's thoughts or opinions from ppl who have done this before. I don't use 4wd that much, but don't want any trouble when i do. Am I likely to be breaking axles easily up the beach, or out bush or is it as simple as keeping my hubs unlocked on the road and i will have no worries. Also, I have heard some ppl welding the spider gears together, and some welding them to their housing. Who's done this and what tips have they got? All tips appreicated
the diff probaly wont break because it wont be in there long enough
welding up front diffs is a waste of time
1 u will break cv's
2 u wont need the steering system any more as it wont do anything any way(the truck won't want to turn)
better off with an air locker or auto locker or just leave it
3 it will drive like crap

ok cool then, kind of answers that. I do have a spare diff should anything go wrong but yeah. as for the "tight LSD", it is just a lsd that i put some more shims in to tension up the worn spring and yes it is tight and has been for the 6 months i have had the shims in. As for the reason of it driving like crap, I don't plan to have the hubs locked in on bitumen, but if thats referring to it being shit even offroad, thanks for the heads up!
yeah it will be bad off roadomlet wrote:ok cool then, kind of answers that. you will find you may have to unlock 1 hub to turn corners even off road
you would be better off with the lsd in the front and the welded one in the rear then u could easily up grade to a lokka when u have the cash
the rear is heaps easier to pull apart

yeah the tight LSD wont last forever mate, no such thing as a LSD in a hilux diff, sorry but its true.
with welding the front diff, it will be bad in both on/off road. as said before, you would be better of welding the rear and leavin the front normal. dont even bother puting your shimed up LSD in the front cuase it will be back to normal soon.
i dont recomend welding any diff, jus save more peny's and get a locker even a machanical one but i would rather an air locker over a welded diff or machanical diff.
