excesive smoke on a 2h Turbo

Post by nottie »

Ok I have a mates 60 series here at my place doing some work on it for him and have been trying to sort a problem with excesive smoke out the pipe and out of the pipe from the rocker box.
It used to be very intermitant and a few doses of moreys seemed to minimise it to almost not there. Of late it has gotten very bad and is constant.
The smoke is white. The turbo pipes are clean so I ruled out the oil seal in the turbo. Was told maybe the oil presure relief valve may be sticky. Have pulled it out and it was very clean with no pitting or scaring.
At one stage I fitted a catch can to catch the oil and divert the gas back into the motor pre turbo. This failed as the excesive smoke built up and blew the dip stick. OIL EVERYWHERE :x .
Looking for comments on what else to look for.
This motor has had new pistons and rings not that long ago.
Next step i would say is to do a comp test and see what its at :?:

The smoke out the vent pipe from the rocker box at idle is a strong blow and gets stronger as the revs rise.

I cant tell you whats wrong but, if you put a catch can in line and return it back into the intake rather than pre turbo it will catch the oil, but won't solve the problem, nor will it blow the dipstick. If it blows the dipstick, something is pressurizing the sump which is not normal nor good.

The catch can should just be put inline and the output hose ran to wherever it did before adding the can.

How much oil does it use

Does it smoke more when its cold/initial start up

Does it smoke constantly or when you give it a boot full, air pressure will increase as you rev it as there it more movement in the block as the crank etc turns faster.

Who installed the pistons/rings, was it done right the rings may not be sealing againest the bore properly.

Possibilities , cracked head, rings not sealing, valve stem seal/s, something is pressurising the crank case and forcing oil/blow by up.

Do you have access to a diesel compression tester?, if so see what the compression is like and if its similar across the board.

pump timing....... or hole in a piston or pistons in back to front. I have seen an engine that had pistons backwards and the only problem was excessive blowby.

I had a similar problem on my NON-Turbo 2H. it turned out to be a shagged diaphragm in the back of the injector pump.

is it idling high?

the diaphragm is easy 2 check, just remove 4 screws n remove cap. it costs round $40 to replace!

Good luck!!

Ok Pump was rebuilt less than 2500 klms ago.
It smokes all the time. Cold and warm. And increases with revs.
Yes with the blow by out the rocker i fitted it to a catch can and plumbed it back in and it blew the dipstick so it is pressurizing pretty bad.
The head was recently all checked and tested when the pump was done.
It doesnt use alot of oil. It has gone thru about .5lt in the last 2500klms.
I will get a comp tester and see what its at.

Hey Jamie, any chance you've fitted up an oil pressure gauge to this thing yet?

Am I reading this right, you've plumbed your catch can from rocker cover breather to catchcan then back to the intake (pressurised) side of your intake manifold........ if that is correct, your filling your sump with manifold (turbo) pressure... no wonder yr dipstick keeps jumping out..... :D
