So...im now the proud owner of a XD9000.....But I cant seem to figure out which way they mount. Ive been told by some ppl that they mount 'foot' down. But most other winches seem to mount 'foot' towards the roller.
This winch doesnt seemt to fit either of them :(
If I was to mount it 'foot' down the free spool level would also be pointing towards the ground.
If I was to mount it 'foot' towards the roller the winch cable would be comming from the top of the winch, which also doesnt sound right.
I guess it could be designed to mount 'foot' towards the car, but I bloody hope not, cause I dont have anything to do that with Plus also I thought the crome bars were supposed to be at the top.
With my one it is mounted with the feet facing the fairlead. The lower bolts hold the fairlead on also. The slot in the fairlead will also line up with the bottom of the spool so the wire comes straight out.
With the clutch lever, the position can be rotated to a convenient position. To do this you need to remove about 10 bolts to allow the whole clutch end to rotate. WARNING: Dont raise the clutch end at all from the winch body. If the gearsets pop out then you will have to pull the whole winch end apart to get them to all mesh in again, and its a major PITA. You only need to lift it seemingly about 5mm to stuff it.
Yea thats what I would seem to think would be the best way to have it, but it seems that If were to mount it feet towards the roller then on my winch, the cable would come from the top of winch instead of the bottom.
Should be mounted feet forward with the cable coming off the bottom of the spool. In this mounting position, the winching load is transfered directly to the bull bar with no tension on the mounting bolts. If the cable pulls off the top the load holding brake will not work
can be mounted feet down or towards the front, moter side of winch goes on the same side as the drivers side(right side looking forward)
u can undo the bolts on the clutxh end and turn it so u get access to the leaver if needed
Erm, one more question...is turning the motor just a matter of taking the two bolts out of the 'top' of the motor and turning it 180" so the bolt holes line up again ?
The freesplool lever can be rotated to 7 diferent postions where the splines and the screws line up, the motor can be rotated 90deg increments as there is two set of mounting holes for it.

I'm a bit confused about why you would need to rotate the motor?
As i understand it you would only need to rotate the freespool lever position right?
What sort of bar are you mounting it to Draven? That may help us answer some questions.
Its basicly a ARB Winch bar on a GQ, has that guard on top of the roller.
I just figured the 'points' on the motor needed to point up, so to get the cable rolling out the proper way the free spool level and motor basicly need to rotate 180"...Does this make any sense ?

Okay, quick question - do you have the mounting instructions from ARB for the winch bar - they have instructions in them for how to mount the winch too.
If the bar is like my suzuki arb bar was - then the feet on the winch face forward and the fairlead will need to have a hole re-drilled in it so that one of the feet holds on to the mouting bolts on the fairlead.
And - i gather you will need to line up the lever so that it points out the hole that is on top of the winch bar right?
Nar, I dont have the mounting instructions.....The bar was on the truck when I bought it.
The fairlead and the winch both seem to have holes which should marry up on mine.. Im not sure what ya mean by the hole at the top on the winch bar...mines just open...When I get home this afternoon ill take a few photos and post them.

The ARB bar for the suzuki has a big slot in the top where you can see the winch cable area, then a separate hole that the lever comes out through.
Winch feet face forwards.
Motor is on Drivers side (rhd)
Gearbox on left
Cable comes off bottom
Drill holes in fairlead 25mm down from middle hole.
remove pins from side rollers and use a large bolt thru rollers and into ARB fairlead eyebrow.
Rotate motor and gearbox to suit cable and clutch lever pos.

Well...I rotated the gearbox and motor 180" last night, and everything seems to look like it should fit now ...There was a few hairy moments when I took the top of the motor off and the brushes came with it
had a look at my xd 9000 toay and its mounted feet down. it was installed by the panel beaters then checked by tjm (i hope!) an i havent had to use it since the smash but is it a prob having it mounted feet down? its on a tjm T15 alloy bar with steel winch subframe

i work with tjm bars every day
some fittment are feet down others are feet on the bar itself
depends on what the 4x4 is
there not all the same
eg. old hilux=feet forward on bar , new hilux=feet down
cheers mate, its a new hilux (98). just wanted to b sure. wouldnt like to see the winch somehow fail under load due to improper mounting. when i said that i hoped that tjm checked it i meant that i hope that it actually got to tjm to be tested/checked. had a few issues with the bar and winch after the panel beaters put it back on. they said "that next time they have to fit a winch they would just send it straight to somebody who knew what they were doing." didnt give me too much confidence in their work. anyway thanks again for the reassurance.
