G'day everyone,
After looking for about 3 months I'm finally about to purchase my first 4WD. A 1975 BJ40 with 4.2litre diesel engine. Unfortunately its 2000km away from where I currently am so Im getting a mate to check it out for me who lives there.
Apart from the obvious things like rust and blue smoke, are there any specific things I should get my mate to look at with this type of cruiser? Any help on this would be great.

I'm buying a BJ40, what sort of things should I look at?

probably look at what engine it has in it as bj40 came out with 4cyl engines all below 4.2 litres if it is still a diesel it might be a 1 hz and if the conversion is done right would be a goer. Look for rust in chassis and pretty much every where else windscreen surround floors rear quarters also look for cracks in chassis as these trucks cop a floging. If it starts and runs and doesnt blow to much smoke and has compliance plates it could become a wpn. check for added goodies like pwr steer and disc brakes also the condition of suspension as it can become expensive to replace.
a 75 bj40 should have a B or 3B engine i think which is a 3.0L or 3.4L respectively. I'm pretty sure 3B wasn't until 1979 or so. It could have a H or 2H put in it if it's a 6 cylinder. (3.6 and 4.0L respectively.)
Look for rust everywhere. My troopy had rust where the upper and lower panels met, run your finger under that groove. Rust where the roof bolts on. Rust in the pillars behind the front doors. Rust in the bottom of the rear doors. Rust in the front bevel thing around the headlights. Look above the rear wheels where the panels meet at right angles for rust. Look under any mats on the floor especially in the front seats.
That being said i fixed all the rust on mine myself and it was the first car i ever attempted any panel work on.

At first I thought it was a sea anemone, upon closer inspection I realised it was a funky ball of tits from outer space.
