Patrol GR locks rear wheels in hi range

Post by JeepJukka »

Buddys Patrol GR have locked couple times now rear wheels.
first time this happened with made in Finland 3.4 transfer case gears, then we swap to 3.7 gearmaster gears. same thing again....... in hi range after few kilometers rear wheel locks ....... when shifted to lo-range, it runs normally.

what causes this? something broke in transmission or are we f.....d up transfer case rebuild?

I would be having a good look at the high low selector fork, to me it sounds like it is picking both gears at the same time , the result been the lock up you are experiencing. Even if it is only picking up half a gear or only going across enough to grab the low gear it will do it.
This would explain why it only does it in high, as when you select low it goes all the way over to low, ie no fault. but back to high it is not going over far enough or is able to more back some and grab low as well.

just my thoughts, cheers.

ive never stripped a transfer down, but considering the patrols have neutral in between high and low, i would not think it could pick up high and low range at the same time,

just my opinion

As the high range drive goes strait through the transfer I cant imaging what else would cause it to bind up!

could you see any damage on the other gears that you pulled out this might put you on to the right direction.

There is a small pin that can come out, and i am almost certain you have left this loose in the transfer case and it is locking gears.

Quote" When you split the case there is a small dowel pin. It sits in the front alloy housing between the two selector fork shafts and can be easily lost, so look for it straight away before moving the cases around. Quote"

first transfer case is now in pieces....... needle bearing is burned and totally jammed (that bearing is in between main shaft and biggest reduction gear)

seems like it´s caused by oiling issue...... dropped t-case and GL-4 oil....... not good combination?
