well besides the auto issue as Sierras don't come with an auto in Australia. What do you mean by better? Better on road as a daily driver. Better as a light 4wd. Better as a full on comp vehicle. Need a little more info on what you mean by "better"

If you're only talking about beach work and light trails the Vitara will be fine, but does need a little more ground clearance as a starting point, before you damage the tank and other underbody stuff.
They can be lifted up to the levels of a sierra (after all the chassis is similar enough that with sufficient effort most parts can either be swapped or improvements beyond Sierra spec can be made, but the problem is the cost of doing so.
In the end a big enough cheque book removes all obstacles...

early 3speeds were tri-matics, but the 4speed electronic controlled type is different (tho I dont know what brand) christover

The NSW Suzy club has quite a few vitaras and they get discounts on parts from suppliers for membership.....
Plus, they've stuffed around before and they know what works and what doesnt... which really saves a packet in the long run.
I think you'll find the vitara capable enough if you're not competition hardcore...

But a Jimny may be a bit expensive depending on her budget..... we know Squik is somewhat biased too.
Jimnies face their own little hurdles to overcome.

not up on prices, havent looked lately. but after 1988 Sierras became wide tracks, more stable and internal fittings, seats and things are better quality, with inertia reel belts etc. All Wide Tracks (WT) have 1300 motor standard.
after about 1984/85 to 88 was the narrow track 1300 (NT)
before 84 were the 1.0 litre motors, with slightly lower gearing to suit, and very basic inside, these are very cheap.
also there is long wheel base (LWB) versions with 1300 and 1 litre motors. these are rare, and many people want them, they climb better and have better load carrying.
Maruti Utes with WT and 1.0 litre motors(bit rare, bit poor in build quality)
most parts from all sierras are interchangeable, but motors and diffs in 1.0 litre are not easily changed. christover
