G'day, i was just wondering if anyone has put a blow off valve on TD42 and if so how did you go about it? Also what sort of mods have people done and sort of power are you making?

Why? Just why?
do a search, been discussed and done plenty times before.
simply put, use the brake/system vacuum onto the vacuum of the BOV. its control by a vacuum solenoid which is triggered by micro switch on throttle and/or clutch.
may need to play around with the springs in the BOV.
that way it will open up only when under boost and throttle is idle or clutch is used. it releases the boost thats still in the inlet pipes when you lift the throttle for a gear change. its helps keep the turbo spinning, especially if your running a big turbo.

bovs are used on turbo engines to prevent commpresor surge when u take your foot off the gas the air in in the piping going back through the turbo and spinning it the oposite way causeing problems, because the td42 dosent have a butterfly causeing air to be trapped no point to put one on your engine

however there are secondary causes. even without the butterfly you still have the problem of nothing pushing the turbo, a slowing motor that gets in the way of the airflow and an intake full of compressed air which is trying to go back through the turbo. so you still have boost trying to push the turbo backwoulds and no exhaust to push it forwards. hence the turbo slows quiet quickly which then has to spin back up once your foot hits the gas again.
higher the boost you run the worse it gets, hence why BOV doesn't do jack on standard motors. only seen it done on those running fairly high boost.
i understand its quite common on some of the USA guys that run 40psi+.
as i mentioned before effect is small and its much better to spend the $$$$ elsewhere.
however if $$$ no object and your running high boost it may be worth doing to reduce lag on the gear changes.

this is a common misconception, which when you think about it, is completely impossible.. Dont forget the exhaust is still pumping through the exhaust housing, keeping the turbo spinning the correct way. The fact that there is now an obstruction in the intake will cause the wheels to slow but no spin the opposite direction..
On topic, unless its purely for the sound, i dont see that a bov on a td will be at all useful.

I have heard trucks with all manner of mad surge noise in the past, so im sure it is possible on a diesel.

I use to get surge all the time with a T3 running 20psi on a TD42. Drive into a bog at full noise and just take the foot off. Turbo would surge every time. A BOV would help stop this and so would be about protecting the turbo not performance gain. And if it was plumed back into the intake there is very little noise anyway.

the turbo is spinning at about 120,000 RPM in a petrol when the butterfly closes and there is no where for the boost to go.. it stops the wheel from spining breifly multiple times..giving that effect..
there is a specail diesel BOV you can get.. or with a bit of fiddling around you could make a normal one work.. but id leave it unless your getting hektic mad turbo surge and its killing your turbo every 5000kms.. then id be looking at something..
Theres a guy called Shaun Swaffield up this way that has a hotty GQ Turbo Deisel...

He's got his own pump, manifold and turbo combo with a air to air intercooler and nitros and it puts out upwards of 260HP at the wheels thru an auto.
It's pretty crazy and gives alot of the turbo petrol/v8s a run for their money.
It was at Mud Bulls and Music this year racing around.
