General engine tech Q - Subaru
Have a friend with a 92 liberty, with a 97outback engine in it. On petrol and gas, and just recently comming into the hotter weather it's started playing up.
Once the engine is warm, it won't idle. It drives ok, but coming into intersections etc it will stall. This happens on both petrol and gas.
Any ideas/suggestions to try before they go spending hundreds of dollars on labour at a mechanics while they try and diagnose it?

The EJ25 has more grunt than the EJ22 which was originally in this car. It is a transplant that is quite easy if you have all the EJ25 components. The motor is a straight bolt in.turbo gu wrote:Why the would you put one of those turds into anythingMICK77 wrote:97 Outback = EJ25 Quad cam.nicbeer wrote:I was going to say leadz or coil.

is the check engine light coming on Sounds like the idle control valve it's the moduel near the throtle body that's bolted to the intake manifold, this can be pulled off and cleaned with carby cleaner or carbon cleaner as they can gunk up after awhile.

Subaru motors hate vacuum leaks, so check all intake sections and vacuum lines.
Does the check engine light come on, or has it come on at some stage? to check the codes under the dash there is two sets of plugs. Should be two black ones (male and female) and two green ones (male and female). Plug the two black ones together and turn the ignition to on. This should cause the check engine light to iluminate and flash out either a code (long flashes, then short flashes) or if no code is present, flash at 1.2 second intervals. This is providing the conversion was done properly. To reset the ECU, first rectify the cause of any codes. Then plug both green plugs and both black plugs together. Turn the ignition to on and hold the accelerator pedal to the floor for a second, then half way for a second, then release it. Start the motor and drive the car at over 11km/h for at least 30 seconds, getting into 4th gear. By now the check engine light should be flashing the no code series (constand 1.2 second flashes).
The IAVC valves tend to play up on subaru's as they get on. A good clean out and ECU reset often fixes them, but sometimes they just crap out good and proper.
