Bolt on alternatives/upgrades for hj75 alternator

Post by dogbreath_48 »

My alternator is stuffed, apparently beyond repair. It's the internally regulated model - 12v, I believe 55amp?

Since it needs to be replaced I see an opportunity for an upgrade. Are there any other alternators that will bolt on? (later cruiser, dyna, coaster etc??) Are there updated aftermarket alternators available? Are aftermarket alternators any good in general (looking at $500 from bursons).

Alternatively does any one have a suitable second hand alt for sale in working condition or at least rebuildable condition?

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Can't help with a compatable swap, but small-motor repairers charge about $1/Amp to rewind an alternator to give extra output. Upgrading an old alternator is usually cheaper than a new aftermarket solution.

Thanks kingchevy, very helpful ;)

$597+GST from Ashdown Ingram. $400 did sound a little too good to be true! Dunno what trade price is but could still be a good option.

My auto-elec told me my alternator couldn't be rebuilt - no continuity across two points. I'm not exactly certain what he was testing but he claimed it may have thrown a winding or similar. I'm inclinced to trust him as he's always been honest and helpful in the past and he woulda have got the job rebuilding the alt, if it were possible.

Now before i go spending $600+ on a new alt, how can i check for certain my alt is rooted? :P

You will get a better price if you squeeze them a bit mate... I do think terrian tamer would have the high output ones..

Rang around a bit and the ashdown one seemed like the best deal - other suppliers were either out of stock, nearly same price for 55amp or didn't bother calling me back

thanks Dale I did think about adapting another type - I think the ls2's ran a 140amp?? - but decided to keep it more standard in that department.
