Free wheeling hubs warning.
G`day guys,
Just a warning to all who have manual free wheeling hubs...
Check them each week if you park at shopping centres...
Over the last few months I have Parked my 40 series at my local shopping centre and today after searching for a vibration that had mysteriously appeared. I found that some juvenial delinquents had locked in the passenger side hub causing my steering to be heavy and a vibration to appear.. Needless to say I'm a little peaved to think some a@#$holes would do this... for ..... fun..
WHEN YOU PARK IN PUBLIC KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR HUBS!!!!!

I had a little f**ker that use to lock them every day cos I parked near
the bus stop. I ended up cracking it and calling the cops, the kids parents
payed for the front screapers, wheel bearings, cv's and axel seals to be replaced. I've never had it happen ever again. I recomend letting the cops
know because it's damage to private property. Serves the little prick right,
I just hope his oldies made him work the det off!

great
Yea great 100% locked in all of the time.vk7ybi wrote:Install flanges, almost 100% tamper proof.
Remember some days your the pigeon and other days your the statue
i'd be more concerned that you got
causing my steering to be heavy and a vibration to appear
if he only locked one, it should really only drive the spider gears of the front diff. your front end sounds... damaged... if it behaves like this.
i had a hub jam up and stay locked for 3 years. can't say i noticed any difference after i got around to unlocking it.
as for the guy that got wheel bearings and crap out of the kids parents, you are joking that you think running with the hubs in causes that much wear right? i mean the wheel bearings turn regardless of if the hubs are locked or not...
sounds like you guys should keep more of an eye on your front end maintanence than what "delinquins" do to your freewheeling hubs. crap, i rarely Unlock my hubs, with an auto locker and it doesn't cause any grief...

Spit my last breath
Just cause you are driving with your front hubs locked wont cause damage that would require all of those things to be replaced.betseylux wrote:I had a little f**ker that use to lock them every day cos I parked near

Sounds like you were lucky the parents didnt know much about four wheel drives.
It is recommended that hubs are locked in and the vehicle driven from time to time.
A lot of older vehicles didnt have FW Hubs and ran with the drivers bolted to the hubs.

Yer my hubs get a fair work out but cos I've got an auto fron locker I rooted the front wheel bearing. Not too sure why that happened but my srapers needed doing

Yep, my 2009 SR Hilux has no hubs or disconnect anywhere on the front driveline. All of the front cv's, driveshaft etc. spin all the time. (And its a part time 4x4)vk7ybi wrote:Well Toyota mustve thought so, this is the way they shipped from the factory.Z()LTAN wrote:yerrrrrrrr good iddea....

Your cvs and diff have only travelled as far as you have driven in four wheel drive. The rest of the time they are just sitting there not moving a bit. If you have free wheeling hubs that is.mellows40 wrote:Hey Bad religion,
Yep my front diff is getting old but the c/v's and fluid get changed regular.
I'm only sendin out the warning to others so it doesn't happen to them...
