hilux t-case in fj40

talking to a bloke about fj40 t-case, got a 350 chev with a stock fj 4speed and every now and then i snap the t-case ( too much torque ).
He said he swaped his out for a late model hilux t-case and a 9" in the ass and a turbo 700 and was running a 427 600hp wth no wories. he ran a hand brake from a bj to the 9" with disks on it. he said its the only way to stop it the fj t-case goes off to the side and snaps there and the hilux is straight through.
Question is has anyone done this before and how much do you think this mod would cost.

run a later model 4 speed and t-case from 60 series, much stronger than early style case, and cheap as chips.

saves swapping out your diff too...

you need to fab up a crossmember

and you will still brake the hilux transfer, only other option I would suggest be a GQ/GU patrol transfer

you can also brace the transfer case with a steel plate. Brace the gearbox output shaft cover to the top plate of the transfercase and it will stop it splitting.

Next best option would be a late model split transfer case found in the bj40/2s and the 60 series, this way you are not forking out money on a 9" diff

Didn't say it would be easy :lol:

But yes you are right, but the rear diff can stay, offset diffs with a centred t-case and vise versa is a not a problem

If he was putting 600HP through a hilux transfer he wasnt driving it offroad on anything that required 600HP and had a very poor suspension set up.

A stock 2.4Ltr Hilux motor can break the rear output shaft with a decent suspension set up offroad.

The cheapest strong solution is to go to the late model 4spd and Tcase as BJ mentioned above.

Bracing the case as Jess sugested is a good idea but it doesnt stop them from breaking it only makes them last a little longer.

I would never use a Hilux Transfer in a Cruiser. I dont know what BJ was thinking when he used one in his :D

an offset transfer case/diff is not a problem, until you put load in the back of the vehicle, then you start to have vibrations as the pinion angle changes in 2 planes.

i have a t-case with a bigger idel shaft. 35 or 38mm something like that and i already have a brace from the side of the case to the center made it out of 6mm plate. just like http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Transfer ... enameZWDVW
if i was going to put a later moel tcase and box i would want to upgrade to a 5spd, do these fit straight in, and will my bell housing from my old box fit new one ( 350 chev ).

Ruff told me to do it!! :finger:

I have 3 output shafts all snapped sitting at home :oops: :finger:

My recommendation after ruining them is go late model cruiser, or if you want big money and big stuffing around, put a landy transfer LT230 in it. They are strong, good gearing (3:1) and are offset same as a cruiser.

That case you have is up to 1978. Get a later model one as I suggested earlier, "split case" designation. As jessie 928 said, go for BJ, FJ40 later model 1979-1989 will roughly have the case you want.

Go for 4 speed for cheapness I said, (also there is a 4 speed with split case from 1980-1984 HJ47s that has the handbrake drum on the rear of the split case) so you wouldnt even need a handbrake cable.

BUT

If you have heaps of money, run a auto and a Atlas.


Will your bellhousing fit? do a search, and tell us, some types do and others dont, you may need to grind 5mm off the inner ring where the box bolts up to get it to work, although most interchange between 4 and 5 speed.

Do they fit straight in? YES and NO... the tailshafts are different lengths, the flanges are different, the mounting points are different and you will need to fab up a crossmember (same as for the 4 speed with later t-case)
(Bearing in mind it is less work than putting a hilux case in and nine inch diff, and handbrake cabling) SO, if you are not up to swapping a cruiser box and case into it, then you are certainly not up to fitting the gear you mentioned in your first post.

But its no more or less work that fitting a hilux t-case....

OR

Just run the "unbreakable" hilux one like your mate, with the 9" diff (from memory the cruiser crown wheel is a fraction larger than 9" too) and fab up all the handbrake stuff...

Either way you are in for some serious fab time. :x

Me personally, I would take it to a shop, and just pay him. :cool: (Bubs is out Jimboomba way and could fab it for you)

no wories, i will search around and see how much i can pick the box and tcase up for. dooing the fab work is no big problem just would be nice if it went straight in unlike everything else that i do with this thing.

yeah, got a split case from a 47 i think, havent done much with it since been replacing all steering with hi-steer from locktup and new spring shocks and not to mention the motor went bang. just got it back on the road from that, still finishing a few thing on it tho (it never ends)
