MQ ticking noise

i got the clutch in my car (81 SD) and the car drives now (yay) but there is a ticking noise coming from somewhere in the driveline and the ticking noise gets faster when u accelarate and when u rev it at idling stationary it doesn't make the noise.
Try to make sense of what i am saying coz this is shitting me

sounds like some one put a cable tie on ur drive shaft

Its diesel right, so the fuel pump cant be ticking for some reason. Yeah cable tie could be it or maybe a uni is about to go??

Need more info......

by the sounds its definately drive line but where ???
sound coming from front or rear?
sound only there under acceleration/decelleration/crusing ???
sound only there when cornering or all the time ???
sound only there when clutch is pushed in or left out when driving ???

check things like ....

handbrake:
is the cover plate is rubbing?
is the cable vibrating on the body somewhere?
is a pad loose inside the handbrake drum?

drive shafts:
are the universals in good order?
are the slipjoints in good working order?


Diffs:
are the pinion bearings worn/loose?
is a front hub locked in and not engaging properly?

Fix it:
I do it this way but I'm not telling you to do this .....ok ?
It is dangerous and could cause death if I wasnt carefull.... fuggin careful !!

I jack the rig up and put it on stands ( under the diff tubes)
I tie the rig to something solid (the shed & I use chains)
I place additional blocks or stands under the chassis rails but leave a clearance ( redgum blocks of wood )
I get friend to "drive it" at the most noisey point I've noticed.
I get underneath and listen carefully to pinpoint the problem area.
Once an area is defined...... shut it down and check everything in the immediate vaccinity.

I've solved heaps of rattles/squeaks/clunks/clicking/etc etc this way, but its bloody scary, It usually takes 2 - 3 hours setup time I'm that carefull, after all ........... only got 1 life !!

sorry about the brief description guys i was sorta in a hurry before. Ill explain a bit more in detail now. Firstly the car has 33inch tyres on the back and 31's on the front i thought they may have something to do with it but i doubt it (just waiting to get some 33's for the front (i am a uni student with limited funds :cry: ) the handbrake drum was ceised up b4 but now g/box has been out and everything has been cleaned thoughly and regreased/lubricated but the hand brake was setup properly b4 but now it is fine but the noise is still there. I have to top up the gearbox and transfer oil as i ran out of oil to refill them (they r nealry full few hundred mL off) and the auto shops were closed for the day today(will do that tomorrow) so i thought maybe that would have something to do with it but i doubt it. My mate reckons it is something to do with the handbrake coz the back plate on it is a bit bashed up but doesn't look to be hitting the outter drum so as soon as i can (not tomorrow, uni :x ) tuesday i will jack the car up with axel stand safely and check it out as best as we can.
I was just worried about it before thinking i might have to pull the gearbox out again and i have refilled the back axel with correct fluid and the front has been topped up.

another quick question for you guys if u don't mind i replaced the spigot bush and oiled it up properly but as i was inserting the new one i broke a bit of it off. About half of the cirlce about maybe 0.2 mm off the back of it. I didn't really see it unitl the box was nealry in and on start up the car doesn't squeak or anything yet so i take it that will be ok. ( the rest of the bush is fine just a little bit off the back)

we jacked the rear wheels up and turned the back wheel around slowly manually and by the engine. It sounded like it was form the handbrake drum so we panel beated the edges and some custom bending was in order. Now i can't hear that noise and when i drove it i can't hear it so i hope it will last

Had very much the same thing happen to me (and my MQ) the other day. Came back from 4wd'ing with a speed sensitive ticking. I thought it was the front drive shaft finally on the way out, because that has been making noise for ages. But, even in 2wd the sound persisted. So back at home I chocked the wheels and lifted each one seperately. No noise from the front, but the rear was clearly making a noise around the hand brake drum.

Sure enough, a combination of dirt collected on top of the cross member, a bent cover on the hand brake drum, and a few hits to the cross member, and the hand brake drum was rubbing on its casing slightly at a few points in its revolution. I was a little surprised, because it definately sounded more like your cable-tie-around-driveshaft sort of ticking.

Anyway it was a simple matter of taking the cross member off, smacking it with a hammer to get rid of the dirt clumps and push it down slights (very stiff, so hard to move far), and bending the hand brake cover back down and it was silent again. Unfortunately, the cross member was too wide to go back on, and I spent a long time with the high lift, running over the cross member, forcing the bolts to go back into the chassis rail. I came terribly close to stripping several bolts and breaking things, but its on now (and probably wont ever come back off).
