I was just wondering...

what are the odds of one of those euro turbo diesel small car engines
fitting in a sierra/vitara...

the Ford 1.6L zetec turbo diesel.
or fiat vauxhall 1.3L turbo diesel engines...


any chance, or just dreaming?

the guy i bought mine off used a 2ct out of a hiace apparently it went nuts heaps of torque and power. but theres alot of work involved

I prefer to rev the ppiss out of my engines especially in the sand and mud not really ideal way to treat a diesel motor. What do you want to use the car for ? There are many better cheaper petrol powered motors out there that are better suited to a sierra. Thats just my opinion, i say if thats what you want just do it, but you will probably get alot of ppl here telling you that a heavy oilburner has no place in a sierra engine bay.

they came standard in india i think it was with a 1.9L TD Peugot engine at one point...

Mud4b did a conversion for Australia Zoo, IIRC, using a Mazda RF diesel which apparently went pretty hard. If you check out the Suzuki section on pirate there's a great td swap write up by Shuduck, also on here but not sure how often he checks in. As above the 2ct is an attractive option also. There is a bunch of info on Zuwharrie , they have a samurai diesel section, but it mainly deals with the peugeot 1.6 and 1.9s which are $$$$ over here.

However, with the gearing needed to make sierra's work offroad it really is not an attractive option IMO. I researched this a bunch and was seconds away from pulling the trigger but the amount of time, effort, and money needed to get it working just makes it prohibitive. With the extra weight, expense, headaches sourcing adapters etc. etc. you really are miles ahead just getting a 1.6 from a vit. Can be swapped in over a weekend, adapters readily available and cheap from BenT, will rev all day and not be too thirsty either.


That's not to say it can't be done btw, it's just a long uphill road that you have to battle up. If it's what you want though go for it! Post pics!

I think the Grand Vitaras in the States come out with a TD.
If thats any help..

Had a look for it but couldn't find, so could be having a blond moment...

But I think the Toyota Blitz? came out with a 2L D & that was just an early serria but it would be hard to find one of those now..

and I think you mean toyota Blizzard, which is a Daihatsu.

I still don't think a diesel is a good idea in a sierra. Too much weight, too little powerband for the gearing, too many $$ for a decent diesel, no decent gearbox choices, too many troublesome car diesels ( like the mazda motor used in Japanese diesel vitaras - apparently something of a hand grenade.

I love diesels, but not in a sierra thanks.

so so conversion, they are a pain to deal with and sourcing the engine they use is nigh on impossible in Australia. having driven a couple of them in the US they were ok but this was before tcase gearing was readily available and was the primary reason the owners did the conversions to get a more torquey engine.

Better off going tcase gearing and a realiable engine than putting a heavy engine in a Sierra

the i30 are good little engines but they are still heavy for what they are and my younger bro has one its a great car but suffers heaps from turbo lag which isnt ideal for four wheeling but still a nice little engine but i bet they are $$$$$$$

How common is the vw diesel down under? They are easy to install with adapter (www.acmeadapters.com). They are plentiful and cheap up here. I have a 1.9TD in my 413 k and it us awesome

I would never go near a Peugeot diesel

I may be getting old and senile..

but i recall reading that the fiat 500 diesel was a joint job between suzuki and fiat, based on the G13 series...

be waiting a while to get one off a wreckers though, the 500's hven't been out that long here, not even sure if they released the diesel in oz.

I have a 3.1 TD intercooled motor out of an imported MU in my LWB :D
Its a very tight fit. But blows a lot of cars off at the lights and can smoke the 33`s

I was looking at the Toyota 1N-T engine for a while. It's a 1453cc 4 cylinder turbo diesel out of a Starlet/Corsa/Tercel. It has a compression ratio of 22:1. Output of 66 hp (49.2 kW) at 4700 rpm with 96.1 ft-lbf (130 N-m) of torque at 2600 rpm.

One issue is that no cars were brought into Australia with these engines, so registration may be an issue. There were quite a few in NZ and I've even seen photos of one conversion:

I don't know if they used a Suzuki or a Toyota gearbox, but the engine bay looks pretty neat.

There was a guy on Zuwarrie looking at trying this a while back. I would email him to see how he went, but the site keeps telling me I'm banned for some reason.

Has anyone in NZ tried this one? Or does anyone know if there's a RWD toyota box which will bolt up to the engine?

I had a samurai with the 2ct in it . If you are going to swap one may as well get the 2.0 over the 1.5 (1n ) and there are rwd gearbox's for them . Mine had a t50 behind it , with the hyd clutch . You could tell the extra weight up front but it would still lift the front end when you dropped the clutch . It could leave a few ricers off the line too but they would get me back by 60 kph :oops:

Bugger trying the isuzu motor that would be a tiight fit .

What about the bitsamissing 2.5TD? I've come across one "a mate of mine has this" on some other forum.
