Just fitted a Magellan chart plotter and had trouble with it shutting down every time the starter was used. This was never a problem with the Garmin 128 I have come to the conclusion that the voltage drop during cranking is initiating the shut down. The unit is wired direct to the battery so the drop is not caused from running it through the acc of ign systems.
Can anyone advise on a suitable fix. :?

Find out the voltage across the battery when cranking if you can your battery could be on its way out ? Should be 12V or so (down to 11.5V ) Other than that I can't think of anything else that could be effecting it.

I run 3 N70 Exide Extreme's (less than a year old) in paralell but cranking the big block must create voltage drop to the point causing the GPS to shut down the Garmin wasn't as sensitive and never had the problem. I need some sort of compact aux power sorce during cranking.

mmm... pick up a big 1 farad capacitor from JB or something that they use to protect amps in cars, other than that, put in another seperate battery?

We had the same problem with our FX 324, the fix was to hook it up to 24V as a marine GPS it can handle up to 36v the cut off level for ours was 10.5V.
