GU 4.8 PETROL FUEL :( HELP

Post by RIZZO »

Can anyone help me out , i own a 4.8 petrol, wagon, awesome power love it ,. i've owned 3 v8s before this wagon and this 4.8lt would have to take the cake for drinkin juice, fark me the manager of caltex would go broke, does anyone know is there tunes that we can get done, nissan here are ediots they just want ya money, also is there turbo kits for these 4.8s i reckon a turbo bolted to it would be an animal power wise and would maybe help with fuel as well???????

How much fuel does it use?

I get 17ltrs per 100 on a combined cycle with my 4.8. You must give yours heaps all of the time. That will do it.

O2 sensors could be buggered. I beleive they do run a little rich with factory tune but not enough to be the cause of poor economy. Try ringing PGS in Mornington, Melbourne for aftermarket ecu's and turbo info on 4.8's.

Mate I feel ya pain, It is rediculous how much feel these things chew, I put mine on gas, at the start I had major problems with the system, but I tell ya what, since its been rectified it has been great. Still though if you tow on gas, it is going to drink LPG by the bucket load, expect 200k per 85ltrs (if ya get a tail wind). On petrol Im sure I dont get any better then 20ltr per 100k on the hwy, and 28ltr round town, good power though.

Yes there is turbo kits, and yes there are ways to get better economy, a new engine management system can also yeld better power and econ. though this will present other problems like auto prolems, engine lights on, and more then likely tune issues. I diddnt want to take the risk..

If I do get some money I can spare one day I will get a chip for it, the one I was looking at is a uni chip, I think you can have 2 tunes so that would give me power and econ, but in my car I wanted it one for gas one for petrol. One day!!!

Casey

Hi,

Mate I'm really highly considering of selling it, I honestly cant afford to keep this 4.8, we are goin through over 200 a week in fuel, misses takes it to work mon to fri then we might go for a bit of a 4b on weekends, i could easily run an old school v8 cheaper than this. misses has to go to work all day just to pay for the fuel to get there, this is my first and last petrol 4wd ever, goin back to 4.2td, .
Yeah mate there is a few decent spots, I'm not the best bloke to ask about fishing but if you head out to burnett heads sorter towards bundy port, its not bad, can be worth while :)

Its turning 36" tyres which wouldn't be helping with fuel economy but fark shouldnt be chewing this much , whoever thinks these 4.8 aren't to bad on fuel have never owned turbo diesels i guess

Is it auto or manual? Don't know what the goverment rebate is on a LPG system at the moment but you shouldn't be much out of pocket and you will probably slash your running costs in half.

just get gas injection, get some money back from the rebate and be happy with it ;) wont take long to make your money back!
oh and also throw some 31's or 33's on it!

my 5.0l gu has the old school mixer set up and uses 22l/100km round town and 18l/100 odd on the highway.
thats running fat 33's, bar work, draws, heavy ass work roof rack, winch, duel batts, roof awning etc

so with gas at newy around the 57c mark it cost aound $51 to do 400km.cheap i must say!
petty's have less servicing intervals than diesels and are generally cheaper to service!
well my 5.0l is anyway, 5l of oil and an oil filter every 7 thou=$30odd :D

compare a fairly worked td42t that would use around 12-16l/100km your looking at around $100 to do say 5-600 km

then 10l odd of oil, filters etc every 5thou will start adding up!

dont get me wrong i would love a worked 4.2 diesel one day but its the v8 for afew years yet :D

i would never own a petty forby if it wasn't on gas, sure you do lose some power(not much in my case) but it its not the end of the world ;)
00 td42t wagon
stock engine, set up for work and play!
engine soon to be honking ;-)

gas injection and you wont lose power.

talking to a mate, whos going through his licensing to fit this new company, and on a SS ute i think they made 3KW more, without really going to a more aggressive tune. much better on fuel than a mixer setup too.

also, the 36's on the commute to work and back will be destroying any attempt at economy, my 35s are alright on the highway, but around town i can go through quarter of a tank in about 100kms, thats turbo diesel with gas injection.

Gas is the only way to run them imho. I would not even consider owning a petrol 4.2/4.5/4.8 Patrol that wasn't on gas. You'd almost be crying every time you filled it up watching the dial on the bowser clicking over. Even my petrol SWB TB42 was too thirsty once it had mud tyres on it, sold it and got a dual fuel wagon instead when petrol started going (more) mental back around 2004.

What's worse is that petrol is only going to get more expensive and resale is going to get more and more hammered.

Go the injected gas and the power loss will not be all that noticeable. And you can just switch to petrol if someone is tripping your racing instincts at the traffic lights ;)

If your in bundy I can`t see you running 36`` tyres for long so why not think of dropping to 33s to get a better rev range on the road.4.8 autos sit on 2200 on 33s at 100 so 36s she`d be working its boodoo out.Ya can`t make something thats the size of a barn go like a race car and expect good fuel.

after reading your for sale, add, with 36" and 7" and standard gearing and driving around town im not surprised your getting shit economy....

even if you got a 4.2td it wont be any better as you going to have to rev the motor harder to turn 35's on 3.9 gears...

If you dropped your lift to about 3" and and put some 3.9 ratios in the your 4.8 you would be surprised... or chuck it on gas.

My mates 4.8 gu ute, and 37' and 6" lifts gets average econmy but great economy when he went back to 35's and 3" lift..

Mate i understand 36's it would not be helping the fuel but are you aware the larger tyre the less revs at a 100, you have it ass around,

Do you understand that it takes shit loads more to turn and keep them turning and increase speed, and slow down regardless of the appearance of less revs at 100? once there it may feel all lovely... but that is a small %age of the time/problem.

As I recently had explained to me, the tread pattern makes a biiiig difference too. You might be surprised just how much more juice a set of muddies chews through compared to HTs. Possibly more than the difference between 33s and 36s, in fact.

the chimp does have quite a good point there, i would agree with that. difference between ATs and bald ATs is a litre per 100 at least, so imagine the difference with muds
