Like Bogged, i'm not sure why you would go to so much effort.
Is the original chassis bent or twisted from a hit?
Is it going to be a dedicated comp rig, weekend basher or daily driver?
If a comp rig, and you plan to use all the suspension and diffs as factory, then maybe it's an option. But to go to the massive effort and shove all the hilux drivetrain into a Patrol/80/Rangie chassis, then put the Lux body back on top, really don't see why anyone would do it :?

Why go the Lux body?

Just get a rangy and shove some decent running gear under it. Nowhere near enough rangies get done up here, IMO.

Why not do it? Not everyone wants a patrol, cruiser, rangie like the masses. If no one had the motivation to undertake projects like this our sport would be pretty much a waste of time imo.

I disagree. Our laws are getting tighter and people will soon have less inclination than they already do to be building these sorts of customised vehicles. What we will end up doing is using what we've got as effectively as possible - and that won't kill off this sport/hobby.

ps: last i checked, building something, tearing it apart, rebuilding it, and then tearing it down and rebuilding it again etc etc wasn't a sport, more a hobby. :p wish i had the room to attempt it!!!

Went to GQ for strength? Less ground clearance and still limited by LandRover tough CV's - what a waste. He should have sussed that out a little better.

Mine will be road registered and 100% legal when first finished and thats in Qld where the laws are tighter than most. While cutting down an 80 may appeal to some it didnt to me. The advantages to using the 80 chassis as opposed to just coiling the Lux for me especially in Qld were many.

I think its a bit short sighted to say just cut down an 80 and to be honest pretty boring. Also if you look through Dazs thread you will see that using the 80 chassis also helps maintain a lower ride height also which is another bonus.

It's not so much the discouraging thinking out of the box, it is an unrelaistic expectation that this person will do this mod. He can't be bothered driving nearly an hour to go 4wding. He is doing this mod because he broke a cv on a 2nd hand car with lockers and 31s, most probably playing in a mud hole in Eltham.

Outside the box thinking is great for people who have the skills to pull it off, but for someone who saw a cool pic on the internet or read something once somewhere that said they need the biggest baddest 4wd to do anything, isn't such a good idea.

Sometimes these people need to provide a lot more info about the whys and in many cases a few small mods will do the job rather than running down the route of a massive expensive project that will eventually lead to a half built 4wd in a shed somewhere with no money to finish it. Or worse a half arsed build that is then taken out and used

True this could be the case for the op but the thread may be helpful to others in the future who really are interested in doing it. I just think comments like cut an 80 down or chop a GQ are boring. Add some real pros and cons to the debate rather than just saying go down the most common path, although at times that is an advantage.

Humm,

This all does raise many questions on the Lux I am clearing a space in the shed for. Wanting it to be road legal, might be easier to just put a 80-series chassis (or something simular) under it.

I need to work out what chassis has the largest tyres and belly height from the factory. Any recommendations?

I am not sure on what has the best clearance etc, I went an 80 chassis as I wanted to keep it Toyota plus as I am only going to be running 37s I dont see the smaller front diff as too much of a drama.

I have only needed to add a 2" lift to get the 37s on it and it sits well on standard spings and 33s still also.

Here's a thought: Mog diffs on a Jeep chassis bolted to a 2dr Rangy body (cut down into a convertible ute) with a BMW engine finished off with Lada badges.

Look....a vehicle which doesn't use any Jap crap... :lol:

Yeah, but why replace something that isnt much chop with something that still isn't much chop. GU I could understand as its a stronger diff with stronger CV's, Toyota I could understand as they are also stronger diffs with stronger aftermarket CV's, GQ I don't as despite the big diff the CV's aren't much better and for any money you dont get an upgrade that is as strong as a Rover CV upgrade.

I believe 4wdriving is both a sport and hobby. Every one says why waste time doing a solid axle swap on my 4runner and i simply tell them i do it cause i can, i want to and i enjoy it.

Entertaining the thought for a moment, from a certification/engineering point of view, which chassis out of the 3 would be most likely to be certifiable?

I would have assumed the 80 chassis, due to the fact both are toyota's, however the reality is it makes 4/5th's of FA difference, as all mounts etc would be custom made anyway?
