TD42 Turbo Tuning
TD42 Turbo Tuning
Hi all,
I have a quick question for you all in the know.
I have just fitted my turbo setup to my td42, it is a log style manifold with a TH05h turbo off a WRX impreza, full 3" exhaust and the air filter is from a toyota surf. I got it all running and set the boost to 10 psi and gave the fuel screw about a turn in as a starting point, now here is my concern.......
It goes like a rocket but after about a minute at full throtle the EGT hits 500c easily so i backed the fuel off, now it has a lot less power but I can still get the EGT to 500c in about the same time???? any ideas/comments? thanks, Jamie.

Re: TD42 Turbo Tuning
Wrong turbo for the job? Designed for 2/2.5ltr donk????
What are the actual specs on it?

I will try your suggestions, thanks, as far as it being the wrong turbo the TD05 has been used on many TD42 turbo conversions and works very well. saying it is designrd for a 2.0/2.5l engine is not the correct way to look at it due to petrol and diesel engine being very different and also rpm differences, plus I am told that the compressor map appears to suit the TD42 quite well.
gudday
the turbo is a bit on the small size but should be ok if you don't over speed/stress it too much. Small turbo's designed for petrols can collapse the bearing cages when put on a performance 4.2 litre diesel but for general use are ok. (Hence the custom GT30 cores with 28 specs.)
if you have high egt's you want to 'increase boost' not decrease! egt's are controlled by fuel and charge air (with or without a IC) to get a clean burn.
In your situation you have 2 options - lower fuel or increase boost.....IMO as you have gone to the trouble of installing a turbo you'll want as much power as safely possible?....
get a boost gauge and waste gate controller and click the boost up to about 12-15psi. as long as the TD42 is in average shape she'll handle that no worries.......then adjust fuel until you have about 550'c post dump at full load.
good luck

GQ with 30 PSI of TD42T.........
you will need a intercooler 15psi is the max for it so 10+ your starting to cook the intake air = high EGTs
moar boost
bigger zaust
intercooler
moar powah!
hole in pocket

however as hes reduced fuel and EGT's are still up to high then inlet temp is probably a major part of the egt temp.
intercooler would fix it but then again 10psi shouldn't be making that much heat in the first place.
gudday
nearly every second car on the road here is a GQ Nissan safari import of some description, of those the majority are turboed with No intercooler with boost set at anywhere from 10-12psi ( i have 5 company wagons).
A intercooler is the go but its not your problem at the moment. If you have dropped the fuel and its still hitting 500 quickly have you thought of checking the pyro itself?
As said its only high boost thats gunna need a IC an you're not there......yet
