My RR has a LT77 and LT230. last night my rangie started to make a ticking/tapping noise. couldn't figure it out, it only made the noise at idle or when pulling up to a stop.
Today i had a closer look, noise was there when foot off the clutch, noise gone when foot on clutch...hmm. put TC in nuetral and went through gears, 4th and 5th make the worst noise, but noisy in every gear.
dropped oil and there is bronze in the oil, and afew small bits in the filter. so my gearbox is stuffed (still drives fine, but is obviously on it's way out).
oil level was fine and everything, never been driven hard...so I don't know why it has failed.
Any idea's what has failed and why?

Reco R380 expensive and hard to come buy. Reco yourself.
Lt77 bit easier to find not much cheaper to reco.
Convert to auto.

Mitsubishi 2010 NT DID Pajero wagon, Factory rear diff lock, Dual batteries, ARB bar, winch, Mt ATZ 4 rib tyres.

I agree. Bring on the ZF!!!!
A bit of pissing about, but worth the effort in the end. The Lt77 is an awful unit and not worth the space under your flootrpan. But in fairness, I know blokes I go wheeling with who have had little problems if not any with theres to date!!
Still, the auto is the best option. Yoyu won't regret it.

reco R380's are worth $2000, not a option in my opinion, I did only pay $2500 for the whole car. I will be starting to pull the gearbox out tomorrow night. the Pervious owners (good friends of mine) said the box was rebuilt around 5-6 years ago, but hasn't done many kms since (roughly 50 000kms they believe). The gearbox has been jumpoing out of first on overrun for ages, maybe this is something to do with it.
As much as I want a R380, it's not worth the $$ if I can fix my LT77 cheaply. If I pull it down and find BIG problems then i will look into a R380 more seriously
Auto isn't an option too me, personal choice, I know an Auto is nice and has alot of good points both on and off road, But I like driving manuals, always do always will...espeically in a 4WD

Pull the LT77 to pieces.
have a good manual handy.
Buy all new bearings form bearing supplier,
check all gears for wear.
replace syncros.
you will have to source some parts from a RR supplier.
Put it back together just takes time. not hard.

I used to have this opinion when I had my 2 door Rangie years ago, bought my 84 auto and haven't looked back. That was the 727 box, gutless as all hell but nice to drive.
Off-road, I do miss the engine braking a bit, but in all other aspects it kills manuals. But like you said, it's a personal choice and what suits you is what matters in the end.
