GQ CARBY CONVERSION?

Post by Chopz »

G'day guys, picking up my 1989 4.2TB GQ on friday and one of the dramas with it is the carby. The bloke recons in the colder weather its a bit harder to start but one its warm, shes ok. He has has it rebuilt 3 times since in the time hes had it ( had it from new) and was saying there is like a 350 holley conversion you can do for em that will fix it up...is this true?
Do ya know anywhere that sells the adapor plates...or does anyone have some alternative solutions...

It needs to have the choke adjusted properly, ( not by the guy who has been rebuilding it)

there is no 'direct fit' 350 holley adapter to suit the TB42 engine.
You can use one of the 2F/3F toyota adpaters but it needs the mounting wholes modified and a about 2 inches of spacer under the adapter plate to let it fit.

But all you are doing is stepping backwards to a manual choke carby OR to an other carby that will need it's electric choke adjusted to suit your engine. So you'll be back in square one.

You just need to find some one who can adjust your carby properly. You may also need a winter and summer setting. I know of few TB42s that need choke adjustment with change of season.

yes there is a 350 holley conversion for these tbs i think i sore one on ebay.
there is a bloke building them, they came with an adapter plate brand new 350 holley and a different throttle cable, from memory they were about $500 . the carby also had the mod done to it so it would run on hills.
I had a 350 on my old coil cab and it loved it. ran like a champ after the float was changed. you can park it on a 45 degree angle and it dosnt change the running of the motor.

I saw an efi for sale somewhere on line on one of the forums and it was around the same price as a carby. I hated my carby tb42 and could not waite to get rid of it.

not impossible, just needs to be setup properly! my pick would be advance your car to run 95oct premium as it runs the same as lpg does, then u can tune both nicely.

auto chokes on gq's are known problems, but that doesnt mean ditch a beautifully engineered carby for some piece of junk holly, you will find your economy will go the way of the dodo thanks to holly not believing in vac secondaries, your car is going to become thirstier then a miner at open bar night!

stick with the original and as prev stated get it re-tuned at a different workshop :) mine ran fine for years carbied

Yes, they are a decent carby; you just need to get it sorted.

And this is from someone who hates carbies and always prefers efi.
This is not legal advice.

When duel fuel there is a screen over the fuel bowl that is removed for fitment of the mixer, this allows small bits of crap (often silicone from the mixer install) to enter the fuel bowl and block the small port in the fixed idle jet, this causes lean idle mixture, rough running, hard start. I have unblocked this jet on dozens of occasions for numerous customers.

Worth getting the standard carby sorted, mine runs very nice and smooth on both LPG and petrol and it allways has. I would find a mechanic that is familar with the tb42 carby and gas they should be able to nut the problem out.

And guys go easy on tanz-e After all he is from dandenong don't forget :D
