94 Hilux problems

Post by macklux83 »

Hey everybody, I have recently purchased a 1994 LN106 hilux, there is a few things that im trying to sort out to get it running properly.
It has used about 3 litres of oil over approx 4000kms and blows quite a lot of black smoke (just replaced the air filter) i just noticed a leak at the front of the engine around the thermostat near the injector, Where is the likely cause of this leak?

On starting sometimes it will start perfectly but often you need to let the glow plugs run 3 or 4 times before it will start, and often on start up there is a loud squeal from the starter motor i think, The strange thing is that it usually only squeals if you let the glow plugs heat up but if you just turn the ignition on straight away the car will start without the squealing, Im guessing im probably up for a new starter motor and glow plugs?

Any advice would be great!
cheers
Rob

Regarding the leak, is it a diesel leak, or coolant?

Re oil use, it could be that due to poor servicing, the oil control rings are sooted and jammed up.
some good maintainence should begin to address that.
Re glow plugs.....replace them.

Re starter motor, remove, clean and refit before spending large $$ on another one.
Most likely faults are the solenoid contacts, and sticky mech that engages the flywheel.
Service these items, and they go for alot longer.
