60 series land cruiser gear box help
i have a 1980 fj 60 landcruiser 4 speed box. fitted with a 265 hemi engine dellow conversion , at a 110 ks revs a little hard 3100/3200 rpm , i also have a donor car (which i am going to part out) a hj 60 1985 landcruiser 2h diesel 5 speed box which is great on the freeway , question is can i swap the 5 speed box over into the early one will the parts fit and whats involved and is the 5speed a overdrive ??or is it diff ratio ?? any help appreciate
I have a 1980 HJ60 that came with the 4 speed box, which I swapped out about a year ago for a rebuilt 5 speed and transfer.
The 5 speed is an overdrive, all 60 diff ratios are the same at 4.1:1. So no towing in 5th or the like because they have been known to drop 5th when abused. The rest of the gear ratios are the same, except low range which is a teensy bit higher, but not noticeable.
The tailshafts are different. You need a longer one for the front and a shorter one for the rear. The ones from a 5 speed 60 will bolt straight on if you have the round pinion flange on your diffs. If you have the old square flanges you will have to swap them over.
As yours has an engine conversion, I have no idea what bellhousing will fit what. The 5 speed bellhousing bolts straight to the 2H/2F/3F/12HT, but I dont know If a bellhousing to suit a 4 speed will attach to a 5 speed.
I don't have a tacho, but I have been told that with 31's it will sit on about 2200rpm at 110k's.

The 5 speed is the same bell housing pattern as your 4 speed. It will just bolt straight up. As for your tail shaft flanges I'm not sure... If you have different ones you can have them welded into your tail shafts when you get them lengthened shortened.

Iv'e just finished a similar swap, 1985 FJ to 80 HJ running gear. The box will bolt stait to your four speed bell housing. But as been stated the tail shaft flanges are different. I found it easier to swap the whole running gear, box and diffs. The only thing I found different is the older model didn't have the mounts for a rear sway bar.
spoke to dellow this afternoon , said there are some differences in the angle 6 degrees or so from the orig 2f configaration (which the 265 still is 2f configaration mounting position), to the 2h diesel configaration , said i would need a upright bell housing ??,,,, well in a nut shell has anyone here put a diesel 2h hj series 5speed behind a 2f fj60 petrol 60 series and had angle issues ??? petrol fj60 wagon is 81 build ,,,,the donor 2h hj wagon is 5/84 tricky one
i think thats it ..that the crossmember takes up the angle not so much the engine that takes up the angle as there are a lot of old fj 60 series out the converted to 5 speed i called a few 4x4 wreckers and they were happy to sell a conversion kit mentioning must use the crossmember from the 5 speed , and no doubt they would have been 5 speeds sourced from 2h diesel cruisers , as i thought all petrol fj60s were 4speed ?? correct me if i am wrong , thanks for replyscuba steve 22 wrote:from what i remember you also need the 5 speed cross member

i have a 1985 hj75 land cruiser ute and i am wanting to know is the bolt pattern the same on the bellhousing for a 4speed and a 5speed gearbox, because i am make a change from a four speed gearbox to a 5speed gearbox. i will be doing this to my 2H motor.

or you have a 1975 model cruiser with 4 speed
the 1985 has the stock 5speed and its a ute and i'm pulling a motor out of a 1985 wagon and it has a 4speed...so what i'm asking is the bellhousing bolt pattern the same for the 4speed to the 5speed. this is because the person who had the ute before me had a oldsmobile v8 in it and i wanna put the stock toyota motor....and the stock toyota is comming out of the wagon with the 4speed and into the ute with the 5speed........i can't aford the 4speed so i plan on keeping the 5speed

I know on the front shaft you can just pull it apart at the slip joint and use the old uni/flange on the diff end.
For the rear, I think you are able to turn the shaft around backwards, so that the slip joint is at the rear (you get better clearance too, apparently) and do the same thing - pull it apart at the slip joint and put the old end on to match the diff. Never done that one myself though, so I can't say for sure.
