4Runner Fuel Tank swap

Post by 4RUNNER_01 »

Hi i wanted to remove my diesel tank from under the drivers side and put a new tank "hopefully" under the rear where the spare tire usually would go.

Has anyone done anything similar if so what tank did you use and is it a bigger job than is worth?

Reason for this is the tanks hang too low and mine has just been trashed i need to sort it out.

its a 1984 4runner

Cheers

Keep it shiny side up!

4Runner Fuel Tank swap

I had a guy buy a landcruiser 60 series tank off me to do something similar as they are located up the back between the chassis, but I don't know the outcome. (just a suggestion!)

yeah but a 4runner has no space. i have twin tanks and have thought of shaving a third off of each of them to get them above my chassie rails

pretty sure i read somewhere that you can put a hilux fuel tank in a 4runner and get more capacity and better clearance.
As they are different shaped fuel tanks.
Have you considered an aftermarket long ranger? they go above the back diff.

you can't use a hilux fuel tank as the mout for the lower control arm gets in the way. i have seen aux tanks that go above spare wheel at the back not sure of capacity

Make a heavy duty bashplate for it and be mindful where the tank is when driving over obsticles.

Just watch where you put it, if you drive it off road, the last thing you want is being hung up on the fuel tank and tearing holes in it, i'd put a heavy duty bash plate over it, if i had no other placement options.

Go to the wreckers and look under all the cars for a shape/size that would suit, possibly a small 30 or 40l from small 4 cyl's and run dual tanks.

Thanks gives me a bit to think about, one of my mates does gas conversions and was saving all different shape and size tanks but went and tried a few yesterday with no luck.

Thinking ill have to get one made to fit but i heard of someone cutting out the spare wheel carrier and using a tank out of something that was really shallow that was an easy fit just not sure what tank

Theres just not many that come up only 250mm deep and its already a fairly small capacity tank i wouldnt wanna go below a 50L

and the 4runners definatly dont have as much room as the hiluxs.

Also my tailshaft hits it in full passenger side down travel so theres another reason to move it

Cheers guys

If your seriously that keen on moving it, you could get a tank out of a truck like a 2 tonne flat bed or similar, the trucks that have like 80-90 litre tanks, n cut the boot floor out so only 250mm or so is hanging down n rebuild the floor over it, but thats keen.

If you have a 2" bodylift you could mount your standard tank 2" higher.
From memory the rear seating in a 4runner make the tanks 2" lower than a hilux.
