Hey,
My ln 106 lux has a persistent wobble which is annoying the heck out of me! std 31 At's & 2 inch lift.
seems to have developed over the past 6 weeks. comes on at 100km/h and goes away at 110km/h.
First I checked the wheel bearings and one was a bit loose - tightened up as per manual and was significantly better.
then seemed to get worse again. bearings still ok. so i got wheel balance.
bit better but still there - king pins have no play, cant find any issues with tyres or delamination etc.
My last resort that i can think of is steering damper?
Its not a violent wobble, but with the amount of hwy k's im doing its really annoying!
I know nothing about steering dampers, the stock one has lasted 20 odd years. are they the sort of thing worth buying better brand names or just getting a generic one?
I have noted on this forum that most think the rtc dampers are not worth it.
If it is deemed to be worth replacing i will order 1 today, so i can fit it before my christmas drive.
this was a cheapy i found???

steering wobbles
steering damper or
tail shaft damage or wear to slip joint, uni joint sometimes feels like a wheel out of balance.
tail shaft bolts comming loose!
or loose wheel nuts!
Wheel balance dosen't always pick up tyre separation which can throw a wheel out of balance when driving.

Re: steering wobbles
I'll double check the tail shaft but i think its ok, I did the unis etc not that longa ago. but will check the bolts. YEP all tight and no play in the slipjoint.Dents LN65 wrote:steering damper or

wheel nuts are fine.
i was assuming tyre seperation would be visually obvious and effect at all speeds? is this incorrect?

Hey The Hanko, I remember when I was I asking about this issue for mine, some1 said it could possibly be bushes in the leaf springs, have you checked draglink??
As for steering dampeners, a decent H/D one should be around 120-130, and ive found a TD RTC for 160. Im considering the RTC as it might make mine feel better with no power steering.

Check all your shackle bolts/pins, u bolts for leafs, and rod ends
It shouldnt be the steering dampner, and if it is its only hiding the problem, i dont have one at the moment and it doesnt wobble. In saying that it doesn't take much for it to have a slight wobble at those speeds.

Don't be sucked in to thinking that an RTC S/D will rectify any problems. They wont!. They can mask some front end issues which has the potential to be dangerous. RTC's are great for Big tyres.. Like BIG tyres, bur rarely give any benefit to a "normal" vehicle that is set up correctly and has no other faults.
Is the vibration felt only through the steering wheel or through the whole vehicle?
Have you had a Front end alinment? A proper one!

havent had a wheel alignment... well for a very long time. tyres wear evenly etc so havent bothered.
will check tie rod ends again but haven't been able to see play anywhere. drag link is quite new.
pulled out shakles etc a few weeks ago to grease and bushes were fine.
im wondering if a wheel balance weigh has been lost and its just coincidence as its more a vibration/wobble than wandering steering. its only that it was done 2-3 weeks ago that id crossed it off the list.
