4.2d to GU 2.8 conversion
Sell the breadbox, and sit on your money.
Buy a good 4b when your on your feet again. or if you NEED a 4b, buy a cheap shitter <$5k for now just to get out and about with.
Conversions are never as 'simple' as they seem. Budget - what you expect and double it.
Ozy1 has done one or 2 of the conversions..

Do you have your heart set on a Diesel. ? I reckon a BA to BF Ford 4.0 litre is the cheapest & best solution. I have seen low k motor's with less than 50,000 klms sell for about $400 on Ebay. Just whack it on gas, and you can always add a turbo later for shitloads of Grunt.

You wouldn't have to get a total shitter. If you can live without hardcore capabilities for a little while you could get something like a 1990s Pajero with less than 150,000km on it for seven grand or so. They are easier to find with lower kms on them than the patrols.
Or get a discovery and you'll never want a nissan again.
FWIW... don't buy a big project (which an engine swap is), you will hate it long before you finish it AND you will add to your stress levels because of the pressure to finish it because of what you'll have spent so far.
What does Barnaby drive?

This is not legal advice.
That is *IF* the head is the only thing wrong with it. you would be a little annoyed spending all that time and money to do the head to find the crank is also fucked now...Barnsey wrote:The other option is fixing the 2.8. A quick look on the net and fully reco'd heads are about $1500. I'd need to make sure the rest of the motor is OK though. It's done 280000ks from memory.
Exchanging to the 4.2 would be the best option, but wont be the easiest. Driving a shitter isnt that bad if its reliable. specially when you know it isnt for life. Who cares what others think of what your driving.
Only you and Mrs B?

Ok after looking at your original post things aren't going to be as straight forward as you like
First off the GU 2.8L motor and Gearbox need to go as the 2.8L gearbox won't bolt up to the 4.2L motor as its the same gearbox out of the 3.0L GQ petrol patrol (FS5R30A)
Next out of the GQ all you will be able to use is the Motor as the Gearbox won't fit, or to make it fit you will need to do major mods. The GQ uses a FS5R50A Gearbox behind the TD42 and TB42 where as the GU uses a FS5R50B Gearbox behind the TD42, TB45 and ZD30 engines. What makes the GU box different is that the gearshift housing sits further back than the GQ one, if you were to use a GQ box on the GU the gearshift would be under the heater box, so you will need to source a GU box for either a 4.5L petty, 4.2L Diesel or 3.0L Diesel as they all have the same gearbox, and when my mate went looking for one reciently cause his 5th gear shat itself, they wanted between $700 and $1200 for one at the Wreckers

AA's for Quitters
What MyGQ wrote about about not being able to use a GQ gear box in a GU is correct, one of the above links someone posted goes to a thread which i stated the same thing, and believe me, we bolted the motor and GQ box into the GU and the shifter did sit under the heater box, and there wasnt enough roomto even put in a bent and modified shifter
Are the top covers interchageable beteen gu and gq boxes then?ozy1 wrote:What MyGQ wrote about about not being able to use a GQ gear box in a GU is correct, one of the above links someone posted goes to a thread which i stated the same thing, and believe me, we bolted the motor and GQ box into the GU and the shifter did sit under the heater box, and there wasnt enough roomto even put in a bent and modified shifter
Well I'm not sure what was done, but they were both gu coil cabs running gq gearboxes. I cannot find out from them as one of them has left the country and the other has moved to a remote part of FNQ.ozy1 wrote:um, its been 2 years since i looked at them, but from my real faint memory, i think they were actually different, but i cant be 100% sure,
Have a read of this thread.tuflox wrote:can you buy an adapter for the falcon to gu box

Great job, by the way. I am impressed with the fitment of the dash and firewall.
I used a piece of 25mm Marine grade Ally to make the plate between the Nissan box and the AU Falcon bell housing . I used the AU bell housing because it has a throwout fork , the BA uses a hydraulic throw out bearing . I milled a hole in the plate to take the Nissan bearing cover/throw out sleeve and then countersunk Allen headed bolts to hold the plate against the box . I then cut down my Vernier Callipers so I could use them to center the bell housing by measuring between the Falcon center dowel hole and the Nissan bearing cover . Once I was certain it was true , I drilled two 5/16" dowel holes through the bell housing and into the plate . The other bolt holes were then drilled and bolts fitted . Once all work was done , it was put into a surface grinding machine and both surfaces machined . I used Loctite bearing retainer on the plate faces so it's there for good .
I used the standard Falcon flywheel and pressure plate and a Patrol clutch plate . I spun about 10mm off the outside of the clutch plate so it was the correct diameter . A sealed roller bearing was used for the input shaft instead of the sintered bronze bush .

thats about all conversions are, and as another bloke said, work out ya budget and double it and you'l be getting close, you want somethin good like the gu 4.2td simply gota pay for it, at the end of the day it will cost you the same as buying a geniune 4.2td with plenty of headaches and dramas around the corner,
