Any ideas how to get more power out of a RD28T
Any ideas how to get more power out of a RD28T
I have a gu with a rd28t, and I want to know if I can upgrade the turbo or something to get more grunt.
Cheers

Front cut of an R34 Skyline, with Engine, ECU and Loom.
Change sump, engine mounts, acessories over etc.
Bolt in where RD28 was.
Plumb up intercooler.
Plumb up power steering using a GU 4.5 hose.
plug it all in, fire up ...
Seen the above done in front of me, beleive the motor was round 2 grand.

Was keen of hoping for a couple of ideas
So you dont have the 2.8? The reason they are cheap, they have head issues, and they are fairly underpowered... Chev V8 Diesel conversion round $23k..
May other conversions out there, but doing the work isnt for everyone.
Motsons in Qld used to do a chip for them, but I dont think they still do.
plenty of threds on patrol4x4.com about them, and powerups. The best value in the end usually is an engine swap.
buy an RB30,
buy an r33 skyline front cut, remove tiny 2.5L bottom end and add in said RB30 bottom end.
then follow his instructions.
the turbo will be a tad small but will be on boost quick and will hold to about 6000rpm (all you really need in 4by anyway)

More power
Ihave chiped my 2.8 goes a little better , wish i transplanted a bigger motor as i have spend 10k rebuilding this little 2.8 motor
Re: More power
sell your chip to me then!USERNAME wrote:Ihave chiped my 2.8 goes a little better , wish i transplanted a bigger motor as i have spend 10k rebuilding this little 2.8 motor
I'd just chev with a 6L or GU 4.2 turbo motor with turbo and intercooler would be ok but to be honest forget the chev 6.5 i went in one and its a piece of shite...

Re: 2.8
1500 bux for an exhaust!! whos doing it? bill gates or something..k3lst wrote:t unit chip for the 2.8 cost rough $1200, bigger exhaust fitted $1500 or so.
thats my plan, good thing is if it shits itself you could prob offload the chip by itself for 900 bucks.
you can get them for about 400 bux..
Those 2.8's have the smallest turbo i've ever seen, it looks like a bloody sausage mcmuffin with an air filter hanging off it, ridiculous.
Whats the best way to go about upgrading the turbo? They're a Garrett unit, but have a 3 bolt triangle rear housing, which isnt exactly common?
Surely the 2.8 should have enough grunt to spool something more biggerer?

On my 2.8.. I recently got 2.5" exhaust and it made a reasonable difference, still no rocket ship, but certainly much nicer to drive now.
I guess it all depends how much extra power you're after...
EDIT: my exhaust was $750ish, mandel bend etc.. very happy with it..
from ringwood performance exhaust.

Although a RD28T is a rather week engine, and future head/gasket problems should be expected, a god setup would be mercedes E270 or E320 variable geometry turbo (garret A22 e A28), and audi allroad 2.5 modified injector pump....
Plus....air/water intercooler, 6th cilinder cooling and bipass the cab heater, electrical fans, mecanical valve lifters, improved air intake and straight exaust pipe...
This shoul do it, you cant go above 250hp's cause the distribution belt will slip at crank pulley....

nissan should test their diesel engines alot better before selling, 2.8/3.0 sh#t loads of serious problems f#n idiots. If big free flowing exhaust, intercooler and larger air intake are installed on say a GQ 2.8 motor before it has any serious problems should this help to get the hot air through motor quicker instead of loading up and not being able to get out of that crappy little standard exhaust quick enough to keep engine temps down??
Most 2.8s that have failed have been standard. I think these mods done before head is frigged will help a great deal in keeping top end temps down. well ive done them to mine before head has failed so time will tell i guess...

beer gimme gimme ! ! !
Question for GQ351. What gearbox did you use for the v8 conversion. I am considering replacing my RD28 when it dies for a v8 but unsure if the standard box is upto the task? As for more power from the RD28 I have fitted a 3"exhaust, increased the fuel delivery from the injector pump, fitted an intercooler (yet to plumb in but give it time) and I am also running ELF Turbo diesel 5/40 semi synthetic oil. All these have increased the power and I am now getting an average of 11.3lt per 100k out of the old girl even with 365k on the clock.[/quote]
