My last winch motor died from water/mud ingress, the next one I want to fit a breather which will be pumped with ~5psi when off road to prevent ingress of crap. What is the best position to do this? in the motor end cap or into the side of the body?
Also I had to handle the armature with my hands, is it ok to clean with electrical parts cleaner before final assembly?

between the 2 field coils mate (the coil looking things on the inside of the case on the walls, there is a clean spot bewteen them on one side) Use that.
Handling the armature is fine, maby give it a rub with some 1200 to clean up the carbon deposits.
Clean it all up with some elec cleaner afterwards

Hulsty thats a fine place mate. If its going on a high mount make sure you don't drill the hole too close to the end as the air fitting may foul on the top hat flange if you drill it on the bottom side of the motor. Normally around 20-25mm from memory will clear the case, but measure twice cut once you know the drill...
