having carby problems still, burning heaps of fuel, no power and spluttering over 2500rpms. major carbon deposits on spark plugs and a bit of smoke and soot coming out exhaust.
it gradually got worse but i replaced the vacuum advance unit and cleaned the plugs and when great for a few days then went to crap, i pulled apart the carby and cleaned it all to the best of my abilities, adjusted the idel mixture screw down 1/2 a turn all still really bad
dry compression test done same time all 175-180

there are 3 pipes coming out of the lower part of the carby on the engine side, wat do these three connect to?
they are vacuum pipes and i think they go through to holes just above the throttle valve. i have one connected to vacuum advance one connected to intake manifold and other blocked

anyone please help its my gf's car. anyone with a carby for sale would be good. cheers

Sounds like your choke is stuck on to me. I'm not sure about vitara carbies but the sierra ones are water operated and quite often get stuck on making it run like crap and using heaps of fuel. Hopefully someone with a vitara manual handy can give ya a hand!

yep ive checked the choke and it is operational comes on when first started then slowly opens as it warms. was adjusted to open slightly faster because the vitara seems to keep extremely cool like under 1/4
ive downloaded a manual and had a look at another and they have nothing about vacuum hoses.

just checked the choke again and its fine. i did notice that fuel was excessively coming out of the jet in the secondary venturi, it was erratic for a bit but there was fuel pooling on the throttle valve. anyone with diagrams to adjust or rebuild would help heaps

Maybe the float level is way out and not shutting off? I had a similar problem on my 1.3 a few weeks ago and it came about randomly to.

yeah i had a float problem on my sierra aswell. but on the vitara the float is all plastic and cant be adjusted but it seemed to close the seat before hitting the top of the bowl.
can a fuel pump somehow stuff up and be forcing fuels in? can i check that by taking off the fuel line and blocking it with my finger and turn the engine over to see if it forces it off?

Check the secondary throttle shaft is not sticking open, even a few thou will cause it to draw fuel in, clean the shaft with carby clean and also make sure the secondary diaphragm hold vacuum.

Also check the vent valve diaphragm is working.

It is a Vitara with the plastic body?
If so..
To check this pull the large hose off the top of the carby (the one that goes into the canister)

With the engine off you should be able to blow (with you mouth only!!!!) into
the carby (you will have to stick a hose into the pipe long enough to reach) and it should bubble the fuel inside the fuel bowl,
then start engine and repeat process, (while engine idlng) this time the passage should be blocked. If you can still blow into the bowl the diaphragm is rs.

What happens is that when the diaphragm no longer seals, under hard or load situations fumes and sometimes fuel will be sucked thru the canister into the carby causing it to run very rich.

I normally use a mitsubishi diaphragm and modify it to fit.

just checked that have been slack and just letting my gf borrow my car instead of fixing hers. is that the charcoal canister pipe? when i blew into it it filled the secondary valve with fuel. then i started it and blew into the pipe and was just like when it was off.
