Hi all,
I own a 1990 hilux xtra cab SR5 . i've had it since 1996. last year had the engine rebuilt and suspension rebuilt with a 3in lift. at 380000kms.
I use my car regularly , mostly for shooting and fishing so it gets a lot of off road work albeit not hardcore stuff. I am no mechanic by any means but do small jobs with my limited skills on the vehicle. I do not have much to contribute to this forum but have learnt a lot since being on here and wish i had some of the mechanical skills you guys have.and admire your work. Sometimes i wish i had the skills and workshop to do more work.I have done a few small jobs like i've fitted a dual battery system, diff breathers , lights etc.
Anyway my wife thinks my car is old and I should not spend anymore money on the car (just because shes got a new hyundai accent) . But i love my car.
Well my question is should i spend money and buy a snorkel, and maybe later a winch? Is it easy to install a snorkel? can some one maybe post pictures of an already installed snorkel in a similar vehicle.
thanks
gavin

First of all, if you plan on driving through any water/mud then yes get a snorkel, and I think that having a winch is excellent off road insurance, although I dont have one.
If you buy a plastic snorkel from arb of tjm or similar, they should come with all fittings, bolts, and instructions, they should also come with a template for your guard so you know where to cut/drill holes.
If you want pics of fitted snorkels, do a search on snorkels or have a read through some hilux builds in the members section, theres heaps of good ideas/pics/advice in there.
Tell your mrs that spending cash on your current 4b is a good thing, as you know the vehicle history, and luxes only a need a few things upgraded/modded to make them tough.
Good luck and have fun.

As said, If ya going to do water crossings etc then Yep get a snorkel. It will give cleaner and cooler air to the engine. But I try now to stay away from water and mud as it costs ya too much in the long run to replace the electrical stuff, so I wouldn't bother. $400 can be spent in better places like a turbo. You should be able to a surf setup close to $400 that's if yours is a desiel.
Whinch is one of those things that sits on the front and doesn't get used very often. If you like going 4x4ing by yourself then it is piece of mind to have one.
Everything thing comes at a cost. You really got to look at what sort of driving you are going to be doing and where to spend your money.
My 2 cents.
