gu ute shake

my gu ute all of a sudden will start shaking uncontrolably till i come to a complete stop.Its not a certain speed and doesnt happen all the time just every now and again it will do it?

Replace your panhard bushes then if no good still, replace the leading arm bushes. Pahnard bushes are cheaper $12 each from nissan than move to more expensive bushes (leading arm bushes). Might also be king pins but doubt it.

balancing weight fallen off your rims??? muddy rims?? try running the rears on the front. and check your bush's as stated...

could be a caster issue if you have recently lifted it.

As ludacris said it is most likely panhard rod bushes.
Could be a tie rod end, king pin bearing, control arm bushes, tyre not bolted on, missing balance, tyre out of round etc.

tried driving mine without one, and did as you describe, any bump would set it off.

just another thing to check :lol:

No its not.

Steering damper is not there to cure or stop shimmy. It is there to make the vehicle nicer to drive.

Steering dampers are used to cover for an underlying fault in the steering.

i understand that.
all im saying, is a vehicle with a standard steering damper on it, which normally drives just fine, without the steering damper it shimmies like a monster. so if a seal has let go on the steering damper, it is worth checking

Another very common problem with patrols when the suspension sags, is the caster will be incorrect if you have not changed the caster accordingly, this will create a headshake if it is excessive, usually when hitting a bump or pothole.
There is a explanation on caster on our website in the tech pages.

It is common after a 4wd trip because bushes tear and coils get compressed.

We would fix approx one patrol per week with a headshake problem, also check what the other guys have stated prior to me.

5 MIN JOB undo king pins bolts, check bearings, remove thin metal washer,. done. these washer dont do crap, a few of my mates have had the same problem as well until now, have run mine with no washers, got rid of all the shakes, I have checked there is no water and or dirt penetrating inside if you do these up firm, also the rear panard rod and drop arms play a major part, these shakes have nothing to do with a steering dampner, all they are good for is a tyre blow out i found

Dude, those "washers" are actually shims that are used to set the preload of your swivel hub/king pin bearings. Nissan didn't put them there to stop the water and mud getting in. :roll:

What does the rear panhard have to do with this guys problem? I'd also bee keen on a photo of your rear drop arms too. :D

I have heard of a lot of people taking a shim out and its helped, haven't tried it on a Patrol myself only ever on Landcruisers when they had too much play.

hi god,I didnt state it properly sorry, i meant by taking the shim or washer ,or whatever word is needed to state that part out, helps with the shaking and doesnot let any debris or foreign objects entering the king pin bearings, how is that is that stated better for you, it may not be the blokes problem but it has been alot of other peoples problem with the shaking, try it makes a difference,and have never heard of it damaging any king pins yet,

also try it , take just one rear panard rod bush out and go for a drive, see what steering does, i know it sounds weird but it affects the steering shake

Unless his panhard bush/s are almost non existent, i can't see this being a cause. Front panhards would contribute to its cause (and has proven to help in most cases).

I can definately see how it could make it worse though (or appear to be worse) - while the front is shimmying, the tail would also be directly reflecting the front end actions.

yeah my gu done it , i done everythin to it, i rebuilt the whole front end, wheel bearings king pins everythin, wasn't cheap, did make a lil difference then i replaced the bushes that was buggered at the time whcih was the rear panard rod both ends of it, vehicle drove like a train on tracks, beautiful. It could be a numerous things with this blokes truck, really gota do one thing at a time, but sometimes it boils down to the most simplest things

mine was doing the same thing, turns out the bolt that holds the panhard rod to the chassis mount was loose.. problem solved!

Check your wheel bearings. It worked on mine, tho mine wasn't that bad!
