Pre or Post turbo installation for EGT probe?
Im just about to install a EGT gauge on my 12HT and there seems to be alot of pros and cons to the installation site of the probe, in the manifold or post turbo. Is there a more appropriate place in the manifold or adaptor plate to drill and tap a hole? Is it recommended to remove the turbo to clear out the filings? Any info would be great.
pre turbo is more accurate. post turbo is easier.
if going pre turbo i would remove the turbo to ensure you dont have pieces risking your turbo.
post i probably wouldnt bother taking it off.

Post-turbo is definately the easier option, but pre-turbo is the ideal spot. I'm moving mine from after the turbo into the exh manifold, just in front of the turbine inlet, in the near future. Drill and tap with penty of grease and it will be ok. Use a small neodymium magnet to grab the chips as they are coming away. I've heard some people do it with the engine running to blow any swarf out as well. Small chips/swarf going through the turbos turbine should be ok when it is just idling. People always seem concerned of something coming loose off the probe and destroying the tubine wheel of the turbo, but i've never heard of this happening to anybody before. Has anyone heard any horror stories?!

I opted to have mine pre turbo, as all the information I have found, says that pre turbo is more accurate. I would'nt be too worried about bits of it coming off, as the thermocouple unit seems fairly strong.
I sacrificed one of the heat shield bolt holes for mine, as it meant there was alot more material around the hole. I was a little worried about cracks forming in the manifold if i drilled and mounted it in a thinwall area. These fears may be unfounded, but I thought it was better safe than sorry. You also get a pre drilled hole to work with. All you have to do, is finish it off.
The down side is that you lose a bolt from the heat shield and may end up with a bit of a rattle.
Also, Berad is exactly right. There is a a splitter right in the centre of the collector, that seperates the front three exhaust ports from the rear three. Don't drill into it.

What engine do you have? Also I was wondering what coupling/pyro guage you have? It certainly looks like a good fit.
